OAA Position No. 09-10 ANTH-SOCIOCULTURAL-TT

THE DEPARTMENT: The Anthropology Department presents a four-field approach to the discipline of anthropology. It offers both the B.A. and M.A. degrees, with a range of courses in biological anthropology, archaeology/prehistory, socio-cultural anthropology, and anthropological linguistics. It has also expanded its scope into applied anthropology, e.g. in the areas of urban studies, human-environment interaction, public policy, and medicine. The department’s facilities include the C.E. Smith Museum of Anthropology, a teaching museum that affords students the opportunity to participate in the research and design of annually renewed exhibits. The museum includes curatorial and collection storage facilities and archaeological and osteological laboratories. In addition to approximately 50 undergraduate and 30 graduate majors, the department offers service and general education courses to students completing other majors. DUTIES OF THE POSITION: The candidate will be expected to design and develop curriculum and teach courses in socio-cultural anthropology. Participation in the evaluation of M.A. examinations and supervision of M.A. theses are also expected. Please note that teaching assignments at California State University, East Bay include courses at both the Hayward and Concord campuses. In addition to teaching, all faculty advise students, assist the department with administrative and/or committee work, and are expected to assume campus-wide committee responsibilities. Research responsibilities include engaging in research, writing, and other scholarly activities.

RANK AND SALARY: Assistant Professor. Salary is dependent upon educational preparation and experience. Subject to budgetary authorization.

DATE OF APPOINTMENT: Fall Quarter, 2009.

QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates must have an earned doctorate in anthropology (or an appropriate related field) no later than the effective date of the appointment. Within the domain of socio-cultural anthropology, candidates must have established expertise in the anthropology of religion, ritual, and spiritual beliefs. All geographic areas will be considered; however, candidates with research experience in North Africa, West Asia, or South Asia, are preferred. Successful teaching experience at the university level is desirable. An ability to teach applied classes and/or mentor students in our applied anthropology program is not required, but would be an advantage. Candidates should demonstrate an ability to teach, advise, and mentor students from diverse educational and cultural backgrounds. Candidates should also demonstrate the capacity to carry out successful research in the field.

ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF COMMUNICATION WITH SPECIALIZATION IN MASS COMMUNICATION-BROADCAST JOURNALISM

THE DEPARTMENT: Located within the College of Letters, Arts, and Social Sciences, the Department of Communication was established in 2002 and combines former existing elements of the speech communication and mass communication departments. There are undergraduate options in journalism, public communication, broadcasting, organizational communication, public relations, interpersonal communication, advertising and photo communication. A distinguished faculty of scholars teach around 400 majors in addition to minors, and participate in liberal studies and general education. The Department also offers the M.A. degree in speech communication.

DUTIES OF THE POSITION: The successful candidate will have an opportunity to teach and research in a large and growing department and will contribute to implementation of new curriculum in mass media. Focus in this area of the department is on the Internet and web design and state-of-the-art pedagogical integration of all aspects of print, electronic, photographic, video, audio and other technologically advanced media. No longer limited to the traditional categories of media education, the department supports the theoretical and practical synthesis of 21st Century media arts and sciences—the intent is to integrate knowledge and skills of message production with serious critical reflection on the embodied circumstances of human interaction in digital environments. This position entails theoretical and hands-on instruction with a focus on broadcasting in the above context. It also involves oversight of broadcast studio facilities and equipment. University policy prescribes the criteria for retention, tenure and promotion. QUALIFICATIONS: Ph.D. in Communication. The degree must be completed by the date of appointment. State-of-the-art knowledge in broadcasting, digital media and production for the Internet is required. Knowledge of converging journalistic media is required. Proven ability to publish and pursue an active program of research in the communication discipline is required. The ideal candidate will have breadth of knowledge across the communication field and will be able to relate with faculty whose research and teaching interests are diverse. Demonstrated research interest in communication and culture, digital cultures and media studies is highly desirable. Ability to teach print journalism and public relations is also desirable. Successful teaching experience at the university level preferred. Demonstrated ability to teach, advise and mentor students from diverse educational and cultural backgrounds.

FULL-TIME TENURE-TRACK SPEECH-LANGUAGE PATHOLOGIST, ANY AREA OF SPECIALIZATION

OAA Position No. 09-10 CSD-LANGPATH-TT

THE DEPARTMENT: The Department of Communicative Sciences and Disorders is one of 23 departments and programs within the College of Letters, Arts and Social Sciences. It has a three-dimensional mission of teaching, research, and service in speech, language, and hearing. The Department has approximately 45 undergraduate and 115 graduate majors, four full-time tenured/tenure-track faculty, and two speech-language pathologists who are responsible for the management of our Clinic. The Clinic facilities include eleven observable individual and group therapy rooms, one large group room, an aphasia treatment center, numerous study areas, a conference room, audiology facilities, and a speech science laboratory. The Department is certified by ASHA’s Council on Academic Accreditation in speech-language pathology and is authorized to grant the Rehabilitative Services Credential approved by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing. DUTIES OF THE POSITION: Teach basic and advanced undergraduate and graduate courses in speech-language pathology, with expertise in any area of specialization. Supervision of student clinicians in an established clinical program both on campus and in off-campus settings is also required. QUALIFICATIONS: Candidate must possess a doctorate degree by the effective date of appointment with CCC SLP, and eligibility for the California license as a speech-language pathologist. Preference will be given to persons with a Ph.D. in Speech-Language Pathology and a strong interest/background in the clinical supervisory process. Teaching experience and an interest in sustained research and grant writing is highly preferred. Demonstrated ability to teach, advise and mentor students from diverse educational and cultural backgrounds.

THE DEPARTMENT: The Music Department is a fully accredited member of the National Association of Schools of Music, offering the Bachelor of Arts degree and Master of Arts degree in Music. DUTIES OF THE POSITION: The successful candidate will teach undergraduate courses in elementary music education, courses in music methods and materials for post-baccalaureate teaching credential students, supervision of student and intern teachers, and graduate courses in music education. Other courses within the candidate’s areas of expertise may also be assigned from time to time, including directing a vocal or instrumental ensemble. The candidate must provide effective leadership, management, organization, and artistic direction of the Music Education Program, including recruiting students, coordinating conferences, and hosting on-campus festivals and workshops. The candidate must have an established reputation as an artist-educator, with previous public school teaching experience at the elementary school level. Demonstrated ability to teach, advise, and mentor students from diverse educational and cultural backgrounds. Preferred Qualifications: Successful teaching experience at the University level; certification or demonstrated experience with Kodaly, Orff, or Dalcroze teaching techniques; experience conducting a vocal or instrumental ensemble; knowledge of world music; ability to teach other courses within the music department, as needed.

OAA Position No. 09-10 SOC-SOCIALTHEORY-TT

THE DEPARTMENT: Through an integration of traditional coursework with applied research in community settings, the Department of Sociology and Social Services offers a B.A. in sociology with options in sociology and in social services and an M.A. degree in sociology. The sociology option provides thorough training in sociological theory and research methods, along with a full range of topical courses emphasizing the study of social diversity. The Social Services option prepares students for careers in social work and related social services through core sociological theory and methods courses and a series of social work preparation courses with field internships. The masters program in Sociology prepares students for work in research and consulting and for admissions to Ph.D. programs. The department has nine full-time faculty, ten lecturers, and 300 majors.

DUTIES OF THE POSITION: The primary responsibility is to teach and do research in Social Theory plus any two of the following areas: Family, Parenting, Marriage and Sex; Social Psychology (i.e. Identity, Emotions); Economic Sociology, Delinquency, Police and Criminology and Medical Sociology. A secondary responsibility is to engage domestic African American, Latino American or Asian American communities through applied research to address critical issues, and to link them with global developments and overseas communities. In addition to teaching and research, all faculty have advising responsibilities, must assist the department with administrative and/or committee work, and are expected to assume campus-wide committee responsibilities. QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates must have an earned doctorate in Sociology with the required research foci in hand no later than the effective date of the appointment. Candidates are preferred with both qualitative and quantitative training, are interested in writing grant applications, and who have successful teaching experience at the university level. Candidates must have a demonstrated ability to teach, advise and mentor students from diverse educational and cultural backgrounds.
