Learning & Assessment at CSUEB

What are we doing to develop a culture of assessment?

In conjunction with our sister CSU campuses, CSUEB has begun a five year cycle of assessment of the core competencies enumerated in the 2013 Handbook of Accreditation recently approved by the WASC Senior College and University Commission. In April 2013 CSUEB hosted the Northern California Symposium on Critical and Creative Thinking. Following up on this theme, we undertook a Critical Thinking Assessment Project, which launched with a workshop on August 6, 2013. Following a request for proposals, twenty faculty who teach an upper division course with critical thinking learning outcomes were involved in this multidisciplinary effort to investigate how well we are achieving the Institutional Learning Outcome related to critical thinking.

The second Northern California Spring Symposium on Learning and Assessment was held Friday, April 18, 2014 at CSUEB. This year's symposium focused on Written Communication and Diversity and Social Justice learning outcomes and assessment, with a follow-up on assessment of Critical and Creative Thinking. Faculty participants from the Critical Thinking Assessment Project reported on cross-discipline assessment of critical thinking, including development of a rubric, design of appropriate assignments, using Blackboard Outcomes to align and assess, and program improvements suggested by assessment results. A report on the implementation of Blackboard Outcomes is available here.

The focus of the 2015 Spring Symposium was Information Literacy, a core competency, and Ethics, one of CSUEB's Institutional Learning Outcomes.
