5-Year Program Review

Closing the Loop

Our curriculum is changing to reflect the changing role of the statistician in today’s employment world.  As a result of the written assessment, we have implemented further instruction of computer software in earlier courses and tried to encourage more applied data examples be used across the curriculum.  We have also tried to improve the MS Exam questions to reflect these changes. We have introduced more computer intensive methodology and will continue to develop our curriculum to ensure that our graduates are ready for the marketplace.  One of the most important aspects of being a successful statistician is communication.  Statisticians need to understand the nature of the real-world problem, be able to translate this into statistical terms, solve the problem and communicate the results in a way that is understood by an audience with no statistical background.

We have responded to our 5-year-review by successfully hiring a tenure-track faculty member who starts in 2014 (suggestion of 5 more faculty members in our most recent 5-year-review).  Additionally, we added more programming courses and are in the process of adding a course in data visualization and a course in machine learning.
