Determination of Accommodations

By the end of the Welcome Meeting, you may be provided with a Determination of Accommodations document. This document lists a student's accommodations as approved by your accessibility counselor and based on functional limitations in an academic setting. This document is used to initiate discussions with professors about specific classroom and testing accommodations, as it proves your registration with our office and your eligibility for accommodations. If your needs change, make an appointment with your accessibility counselor to review your accommodations. The "review date" on this document (typically listed as one year from the Welcome Meeting) is to prompt students to check in with their accessibility counselor at that time (but preferrably before) to ensure their accommodations are helping to alleviate barriers to access at CSU East Bay.

Students often want to know what accommodations they will be eligible for if they decide to attend CSU East Bay and register with our office. This question is not easily answered before an intake because accommodations are based on students' individual needs, evidenced by professional documentation (when available), and by student report. Two students with a similar disability may require somewhat different accommodations. Accommodations are determined during the intake process and appropriate procedures for accommodations will be discussed at this time.

We will add that there should be a clear connection between students' functional limitations and their accommodations. Students should be able to adequately explain why they need specific accommodations. For instance, a student has a diagnosis of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder and poor processing skills. An appropriate professional has verified these challenges and the student describes limitations consistent with the written documentation he/she is able to give us, such as difficulty finishing tests in the time allotted and distraction while testing with others. Thus, an accommodation of extended time for testing in a room with minimal distractions is warranted.

While we cannot guarantee a student's accommodations ahead of time (before we've reviewed your available documentation and met with you), you might want to review the following list to see what accommodations might be available here at CSUEB. This list is featured in a CSU policy describing the possible accommodations a California State University may provide to its students:

  • Activities to coordinate and administer specialized services, including consultation with faculty for students with academic needs associated with their disabilities
  • Disability-related counseling and advising
  • Liaisons with campus and community agencies, including referral and follow-up services to these agencies on behalf of students with disabilities
  • Assistive Technologies
  • Sign language interpreters
  • Real-time captioners
  • Classmate's notes
  • Conversion of instructional materials to accessible formats
  • Test accommodations including, but not limited to, extended time; proctoring; adapting the mode or presentation without changing content, scope or depth of the test; conversion of the test to accessible format; and provision of distraction-reduced environment
