Chapter Six

Procedures for Securing Approval of Course Assignment to General Education Breadth Requirements and to Code Requirement in U.S. History, Constitution, and American Ideals

A. General Information

Assignment of individual courses to General Education categories Areas A-G and their subdivisions, as well as to the General G.E. Requirements, must be approved by the General Education Subcommittee of the Committee on Instruction and Curriculum (CIC) (the Critical Thinking, Capstone, and Cultural Groups/Women G.E requirements have their own subcommittees which must first approve and the College of ALSS curriculum committee must first approve all Humanities and Social Sciences courses and the College of Science curriculum committee must first approval all Science courses), CIC itself, the Academic Senate, and the President. All G.E. requests must be processed by the college which houses the originating department regardless of whether or not it has authority over that G.E. area. Criteria for all six Area requirements and the Cultural Groups/Women General G.E. requirement have been approved by the Academic Senate and the President and appear in the Catalog.

Departmental requests to include a course on one of the approved lists require endorsement by the appropriate college; the Subcommittees on Critical Thinking, Capstone, and Cultural Groups/Women if appropriate; CIC; the Academic Senate; and the President. Assignment of courses to the various sections of the Code Requirement in U.S. History, Constitution, and American Ideals must be approved by the Committee on Instruction and Curriculum, the Academic Senate, and the President. The three sections are a) U.S. history (at least a 100-year period), b) U.S. Constitution, and c) California state and local government. More detailed information appears in the Catalog.

B. Preparation of Requests

If the request is for the G.E. or Code assignment of a proposed new course, it should be submitted to the G.E. Subcommittee of CIC (or other appropriate subcommittee) on the New Course Request form (see item 6 in format). Proposals requesting assignment of existing courses to G.E. Areas and the General G.E. requirements should use the format in section C. Each proposal must be prepared in 15 copies by the department, reviewed by the Associate Vice President, Academic Programs/Graduate Studies, approved by the college, and submitted to the Office of Curriculum and Academic Programs for placement on the agenda of the G.E. Subcommittee. (Proposals going first to the Critical Thinking and Capstone subcommittees require 8 copies, those going to the Cultural Groups/Women subcommittees require 10 copies). If the proposal is approved by the G.E. subcommittee, the department prepares 15 copies and submits them to the Academic Senate for placement on an agenda of CIC. If the CIC approves, the proposal is forwarded to the Academic Senate and President as described in Chapter 1. 95 copies are required by the Academic Senate Office for agendas and other distributions. Proposals requesting assignment of existing courses to the various sections of the Code Requirement in U.S. History, U.S. Constitution and American Ideals Requirement should use the format in section C. A proposal must be prepared in 15 copies, reviewed by the Associate Vice President, Academic Programs/Graduate Studies, approved by the college, and submitted to the Academic Senate Office for placement on an agenda of CIC. If approved then it is forwarded to the Academic Senate and President as described in Chapter 1. Again, 95 copies are required.

In the following format, please include the headings (excluding material in parentheses). Courses applicable to the General G.E. Requirements (e.g. Cultural Groups/Women) must also satisfy a G.E. Distribution Requirement (i.e. Areas-A-G).

C. Format of Requests for Applying Existing Courses to G.E. or Code Requirements
