Mission

Purpose

The Community Counseling Clinic is designed to perform two purposes: To provide a professional clinical training laboratory for Master's Level students in Counseling at California State University, East Bay,and to provide counseling services that contribute to the mental health, and welfare of individuals and families in the community.

Availability

The Clinic is open to individuals who seek help of their own accord, as well as those referred through schools, churches, community or social service agencies. Those persons for whom the Clinic cannot provide help are referred to other sources appropriate to their needs. The Clinic does not offer medical services and does not serve CSU East Bay students. Counseling services are provided by graduate trainees whose study prepares them for licensure as Marriage and Family Therapists. These trainees are advanced graduate students with strong backgrounds in both theory and practice. All graduate trainees work under the close supervision of licensed supervisors and professors within the Department of Educational Psychology at California State University, East Bay.

Counseling and Psychotherapy Services

Counseling and psychotherapy are provided for individuals, couples and families. Children, adolescents, and adults may become involved in individual counseling; couples may request relationship counseling; and families may participate together in family therapy. Career/life planning counseling is also available. Counseling services may be sought for a variety of reasons, including: depression, anxiety, school difficulties, behavior problems of children, couples in conflict, family conflict, communication problems, work stress, assertiveness difficulties, and desire for greater self-knowledge and growth. Careful consideration is given to the requests of each, person and, in accordance with the training needs of the students, each individual, couple, family or group will be assigned to a graduate student trainee or trainees. Parents and families will be involved in the process of helping with problems of a child or adolescent.

Counseling for Children

We see many children of different ages in our Clinic who benefit from having a safe place to explore family, school, and personal issues. The Clinic has two specially equipped play therapy rooms with paints, toys, doll houses, board games, and other therapeutic tools, which can be helpful to children in working through important feelings and concerns.

The Clinic's child counselors, who are trained and supervised in this special area of counseling, are also are skilled in parent and teacher consultations.
