Credential Programs at Cal State East Bay

The following chart outlines the credential programs available to post-baccalaureate individuals (those who already possess an undergraduate degree). For specifics on how to apply to the program, please visit our Department Admissions Process page.

Complete a Credential as an Undergraduate
As an undergraduate student, it is possible to earn a bachelors degree and simultaneously, a teaching credential. To pursue the progam below, students should be able to complete the education curriculum and field placement requirements by the end of their senior year.

The credential you pursue allows you to specialize in particular subjects or specializations. Below is a summary of the areas authorized by the credential listed:
Multiple Subject Teaching Credential
GENERAL SUBJECTS: The Multiple Subject Teaching Credential authorizes the holder to teach general subjects in grades twelve and below, although this is typically curriculum taught in an elementary school setting (kindergarten to grade 5).
Multiple Subject Teaching Credential with BCLAD Spanish
The Multiple Subject Teaching Credential with Bilingual Cross-cultural Language and Academic Development Emphasis authorizes the holder to teach in Spanish in the area of general subjects in grades twelve and below, although this is typically curriculum taught in an elementary school setting (kindergarten to grade 5).
TEDSPED: Concurrent Multiple Subject Teaching Credential and Education Specialist Credential
The Multiple Subject Teaching Credential with Special Education Credential is also referred to as TEDSPED and results in a Multiple Subject Teaching Credential and an Education Specialist Instruction Credential in the area of mild to moderate or moderate to severe disabilities. Candidates must identify their specialization area at the point of admissions and complete the six-quarter program in order to be eligible for both credentials. This is the only TEDSPED program of its kind in California.
Note: If you want to pursue an Education Specialist Instruction Credential at CSU East Bay, you must already possess a teaching credential.
Single Subject Teaching Credential
The Single Subject Teaching Credential authorizes the holder to teach the subject area(s) listed on the document in grades twelve and below, including preschool and in classes organized primarily for adults. Important Note: The subjects listed below do not necessarily reflect what is available at CSUEB. For the most current list of subjects available, see the Teaching Credential Admissions Handbook for that entry period.
ART: Art appreciation, art history, arts & crafts, art theory, calligraphy, cartooning, ceramics, commercial art, costume design, crafts, design, drawing, humanities, illustration, interior decoration, jewelry, leather making, painting, photography, sculpture, stagecraft and yearbook.
ENGLISH: Composition, creative writing, debate, drama, forensics, grammar, humanities, journalism, language arts, language structure, literature, poetry, public speaking, speech, theatre arts and yearbook.
LANGUAGES OTHER THAN ENGLISH: Composition, language structure and literature of the language listed on the document.
MATHEMATICS: Foundational-Level: Basic or general mathematics, algebra, consumer mathematics, geometry, statistics & probability. Standard: All of the above plus calculus, computer science, mathematical analysis and trigonometry.
MUSIC: Instrumental music, music appreciation, music theory and vocal music.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION: Aquatics, dance, fundamental & creative movement, gymnastics, interscholastic sports, motor development or learning, physical conditioning, sports and weightlifting.
SCIENCE - BIOLOGICAL SCIENCE: Specialized: Anatomy, biology, botany, ecology, environmental science, evolution, genetics, physiology and zoology. Standard: All the above plus general and integrated science;
SCIENCE - CHEMISTRY: Specialized: Chemical reactions, qualitative analysis, quantitative analysis, and structure & stability. Standard: All of the above plus general and integrated science.
SCIENCE - FOUNDATIONAL-LEVEL GENERAL SCIENCE: General, introductory, and integrated science, commonly taught in middle grades up to 10th grade curriculum.
SCIENCE - GEOSCIENCE: Specialized: Astronomy, cosmology, earth science, forestry, geology, meteorology, oceanography and paleontology. Standard: All of the above plus general and integrated science.
SCIENCE - PHYSICS: Specialized: Energy, mechanics and thermodynamics. Standard: All of the above plus general and integrated science.
SOCIAL SCIENCE: American government, anthropology, contemporary issues, current events, cultural studies, economics, ethnic studies, geography, government, history, humanities, international government, law politics, psychology, sociology, United States history and world history.
Credential Information Sessions
The Credential Information Session is an informational evening whereby you can obtain program information and admissions overview for earning a Multiple Subject or Single Subject Teaching Credential including BCLAD and TEDSPED routes. Prospective Multiple or Single Subject Teaching Credential Applicants are invited, but not required, to attend these sessions. It is best to attend a session in the year in which you plan to apply to the program since requirements may change from year-to-year. Other credential programs offer separate program orientation sessions for prospective students. Check with the department about their upcoming dates.
