California State University East Bay (CSUEB) requires that F-1 & J-1 visa student purchases and maintain adequate health insurance coverage during their period of enrollment at CSU East Bay.

CSUEB-Sponsored Health Insurance –You have the option to purchase insurance using a credit card.

  • You may purchase insurance online with a Visa or Mastercard by accessing the following website: After you complete the on-line information, be sure to click on "Notify Your School" and CSUEB will be automatically notified of your enrollment. Please allow 1 full business day for your hold to be cleared. If you do not click that button, CSUEB will not be notified of your purchase.

Note: The Repatriation & Medical evacuation insurance can be bought separately. The insurance can be purchased from Wells Fargo:

CSUEB will continue to provide a preferred health insurance vendor and will accept limited alternative insurance plans that meet the NEW CSUEB Health Insurance requirements.

NOTE: If you have an insurance hold on your account for the Fall quarter 2016 you will need to purchase insurance to remove the hold.

                    Health Insurance Requirements For Fall 2016

      1. Lifetime Maximum Medical Benefit: Unlimited
      2. Medical benefits per injury/sickness/accident: Unlimited
      3. The co-insurance is no less than 100% in-network and 70% out-of-network.
      4. The deductible is no more than $50 per policy year.
      5. The policy must be underwritten by an US insurance company.
      6. The policy covers pre-existing conditions without exception. 
      7. Repatriation of remains: Unlimited
      8. Expenses associated with the medical evacuation of the student to his or her home country: Unlimited
      9. Policy coverage should last through the last day of the quarter.
      10. Policy includes prenatal (pregnancy) and maternity coverage at no extra cost.
      11. The policy covers preventative care treatment

How to purchase Health Insurance to Clear Insurance Holds for Fall 2016

Option 1: CSUEB Sponsored Health Insurance – Recommended option.  

CSU-Sponsored health insurance is provided by Geo Blue through Ascension Benefits & Insurance Solutions  to purchase insurance using a credit card on line.  To purchase insurance:

  1. Go to: “Find your School” and select “California State University- East Bay”
  2. Select the International Student Insurance Plan click “View Your Plan” for 2016-2017 to purchase for Fall 2016 or 2016-2017 annual year.
  3. After you purchase CSUEB will automatically be notified of your enrollment
  4. Risk Management will clear your hold within 48 hours

Option 2: Alternate Health Insurance – CSUEB will accept limited alternative insurance plans that meet the NEW CSUEB Health Insurance requirements for Fall 2016 only.

  1. Submit your health insurance documents to Risk Management at
  2. The review process may take up to 3-5 business days.  
  3. If your Alternate Health Insurance is accepted your hold will be removed. 
  4. If your Alternate Health Insurance is denied you will need to purchase the CSU- EB Sponsored Health Insurance to remove your hold.

Option 3: Employer-Sponsored Insurance

 If you are receiving health insurance coverage through an employer-sponsored plan (i.e. US policy through an employer or a family member’s employment), provide documentation of your current insurance policy from your health insurance company.  Note you will need to purchase the 2016-2017 Ascension (medical evacuation & repatriation) plan at          

  1. E-mail health insurance documentation and confirmation letter of the 2016-2017 Ascension medical evacuation & Repatriation plan to  Include your full name and netid in your email.
  2. The review process may take up to 3-5 business days.

Option 4: Government-Sponsored Scholarship

  1. E-mail proof of your government sponsored scholarship that includes reference to your health insurance to Risk Management at  Include your full name and netid in your email.
  2. The review process may take 3-5 days.


                                              Option 2 will not be available starting Winter 2017

Coverage Dates for each quarter

For removal of health insurance hold, valid documentation of your coverage (lasting through the last day of the quarter) must be submitted to the Risk Management Office at Cal State East Bay

               2016/2017 Academic Year 
















***Please note: You will always have a hold for international student health insurance. The hold will be moved to a future quarter based on your health insurance coverage dates. Please be sure to click on "details" to see which specific quarter you hold is preventing you from enrolling for.***
