Prospective Music Major and Graduate Auditions

The department of Music requires all prospective undergraduate music majors and prospective graduate students interested in studying performance to complete an audition on their major instrument/voice. Auditions may be scheduled on an individual basis by completing the Music Department Application.

Students for whom distance is prohibitive may send a high quality recording of their audition performance via a link to online digital files (e.g. YouTube, Dropbox, Soundcloud) to All audition materials must be received by April 13, 2018, and auditions completed by January 27 will be considered for a scholarship.

All auditions, live or recorded, shall be approximately ten minutes long. All performance applicants must perform two selections, one that demonstrates technical facility and one that is more lyrical in character. Live auditions will also include sight reading. The performance should demonstrate accurate rhythms, pitch control, and interpretive awareness.

Voice students should prepare two memorized selections, one of which must be in a language other than English. Art songs, arias, folk songs and musical theatre selections are preferred. Popular and gospel music selections are not acceptable. An accompanist will be provided.

Piano applicants should prepare 2 or 3 works of different style periods, approximately 10 minutes in total, memorized. Repertoire selections could include:

  • a Baroque composition such as Bach Inventions or Sinfonias, a Prelude and Fugue from The Well-Tempered Clavier, 1-2 movements from a French Suite, English Suite, or Partita;
  • a first movement of a classical sonata by Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven, or their contemporaries;
  • a work from the Romantic period (Chopin, Schumann, Brahms, Liszt, etc.);
  • a work from the early 20th century (Debussy, Ravel, Prokofiev, Bartók, etc.) or a work post-1945.

All performance applicants for Fall 2018 must submit the Music Department Application.

For scholarship consideration, you must audition by January 27, 2018.
Please submit your Music Department Application by January 21, 2018, in order to request an in-person audition.
Recorded audition materials must be received by January 27, 2018, in order to receive scholarship consideration.
