Program Structure

Fundamentals

  • Core: 20 units
    • There are five core courses that every student takes: two-course sequences in microeconomics and econometrics, and one course in macroeconomics.
    • The core includes a capstone in Applied Data Analysis, where students complete a series of empirical projects.
    • ECON 600 Foundations of Economics Theory (4 units): Consumer/producer theory, prices, markets
    • ECON 601 Advanced Microeconomics (4 units): Game theory, information economics
    • ECON 605 Advanced Macroeconomics (4 units): Growth, business cycles, fiscal/monetary policy
    • ECON 610 Advanced Econometrics (4 units): Statistics, regression analysis
    • ECON 688 Applied Data Analysis (3 units) + ECON 693 Project (1 unit): Instrumental variables, binary choice, time series

After the core, pursue either the General Economics concentration or QBM (Quantitative Business Modeling).

General Economics (32 units)

  • Concentration Course: 4 units
    • Take a special concentration course in Economic Research Practices.
    • ECON 670 Economic Research Practices (4 units)
  • Electives: 8 units
    • Take any two electives.
    • ECON 623 - Market Design (4 units)
    • ECON 625 - Urban Economics (4 units)
    • ECON 627 - Personnel Economics (4 units)
    • ECON 636 - Monetary Theory (4 units)

Quantitative Business Modeling (32 units)

  • Electives: at least 12 units
    • Take four electives in business economics, data science, marketing, or finance.
    • Economics courses carry 4 units. Business courses carry 3 units. At least one course must be from business.
