  • Arroyo Literary Review
    Arroyo Literary Review, a critically acclaimed print journal, is produced annually by students and alumni at CSUEB. The journal accepts submissions from writers, poets, and artists worldwide. For more information about the journal, please visit Arroyo’s Web site.
  • Occam's Razor
    Occam’s Razor, the English Department's literary magazine, is printed annually. Winners of the Robert V. Williams Memorial Contest, the Donald Markos Poetry Prize, and the Helen "Jackie" De Clercq Poetry Prize are featured in each issue.

Contests and Scholarships

The CSUEB English Department supports several writing contests annually. Students are encouraged to submit materials to these competitions. Brief descriptions are provided below. The Robert V. Williams Memorial Contest for Short Fiction is conducted annually and open to undergraduate students at CSUEB. Submissions are due near the end of winter quarter(November 5), and winners are announced in spring quarter. First prize is $100, second prize $75, and third prize $50. All contest winners will have their work published in Occam's Razor.

The English Department's Creative Nonfiction Contest is conducted annually and open to undergraduate students at CSUEB. Submissions are due near the end of winter quarter(November 5), and winners are announced in spring quarter. First prize is $100, second prize $75, and third prize $50. The Donald Markos Poetry Prize is awarded annually and open to undergraduate students at CSUEB. Submissions are due near the end of winter quarter(November 5), and winners are announced in spring quarter. First prize is $100, second prize $75, and third prize $50. All contest winners will have their work published in Occam's Razor.

The Helen "Jackie" DeClercq Poetry Prize is awarded annually and open to all enrolled CSUEB students. Submissions are due near the end of winter quarter(November 5th), and winners are announced in spring quarter. First prize is $250, second prize $100, and third prize $50. While poems on any topic will receive full consideration, those that celebrate aspects of family life are especially welcome.

The Virginia F. Iyres English Teacher Scholarship is awarded annually to two(2) English majors who plan to pursue a career in high school English teaching. Senior undergraduates in the English department are eligible to apply for this $1500 award. Applications are due March 10th, 2022, and the scholarship award is announced in spring quarter.
