Teaching
The
Faculty Center for Excellence in Teaching at Cal State East
Bay
supports faculty in their roles as teachers, scholars, and members of the university and community. We provide opportunities and space for faculty to collaborate on projects that improve teaching and student learning. We strive to enhance collegiality among faculty as we all expand our intellectual, pedagogical, and scholarly horizons. Our services are available to full and part-time CSU East Bay faculty at all stages of their academic careers.
Back to the Bay is coming! Click here for information about Back to the Bay 2008.
Recently, two CSUEB faculty members, Oscar Wambuguh and Nicole Howard were published in Tomorrow's Professor. Prof. Howard's article, "Parallel Journaling: Students and Teachers in a Classroom Assessment Experiment", is available by clicking here. Prof. Wambuguh's article, "Teaching Large Evening Classes", is available though Academe Online, where it was originally published.
Some of the services we provide are below (more details are available by clicking on the corresponding heading or you can view the entire Word document).
WORKSHOPS AND FORUMS: The OFD/FaCET organizes workshops on teaching and learning (a list of upcoming workshops is on the CSUEB Faculty Home Page). Experienced faculty share ideas for implementing, evaluating, and revising pedagogies. Faculty engage with one another in conversations about assessment of student learning outcomes, strategies for active and collaborative learning, increasing student engagement, enhancing student writing, using classroom technology, addressing diversity, and confronting varied teaching environments. We hold forums on such topics as advising students, qualitative vs. quantitative research, and the scholarship of teaching. Our premise is that faculty are our best resource. Our goals are always to promote student learning and enhance collegiality among faculty. [ go back]
FACULTY IN RESIDENCE PROGRAM:
The Faculty in Residence (FIR) Program provides an opportunity for faculty from across campus to work in the OFD/FaCET, helping encourage faculty to improve teaching and learning at CSUEB. There have been FIRs with a focus on technology, the scholarship of teaching and learning, assessment, diversity, service learning, and new faculty programs. In 2008, the Faculty in Residence are focussing on the scholarship of teaching and learning, learning outcomes assessment, diversity and multicultural learning, and enhancing classroom teaching. ORIENTATIONS:
OFD/FaCET sponsors orientations for new tenure-track faculty and lecturers. These sessions introduces participants to each other, and to individuals and offices that provide support and help faculty establish a professional network on campus. We work with department chairs to assist new faculty and with search committees to welcome candidates to campus.

INTERDEPARTMENTAL
FACULTY MENTORING PROGRAM:
The Interdepartmental Faculty Mentoring Program pairs untenured faculty members with experienced faculty from other departments and colleges. The mentoring relationship is undocumented and confidential, providing opportunities for new faculty to meet colleagues in other disciplines and discuss their interests, concerns about teaching, and professional lives in an informal setting. DOSSIER & PORTFOLIO
PREPARATION:
We offer workshops that provide overviews of dossier preparation for faculty who are submitting materials for promotion, retention, or tenure and for lecturers applying for range elevation. We also arrange informal hands-on dossier preparation sessions. [ go back]
INDIVIDUAL CONSULTATIONS:
The OFD/FaCET offers individual, confidential consultation about classroom teaching; sabbatical applications; the promotion, tenure, and retention process; range elevation; and post-tenure review. Consultation is also available on revising syllabi, developing particular teaching strategies or assignments, discussing questions concerning student outcomes assessment, teaching and learning styles, and use of classroom technologies. Faculty also may request a confidential class observation. [ go back]
GRADUATE WRITING ASSOCIATES:
The ODF/FaCET helps facilitate the Graduate Writing Associate program. Graduate Writing Associates (GWAs) are graduate students who have been trained to help faculty make courses more writing-intensive. GWAs know how to design effective assignments, add writing to existing assignments, help instructors and students to use writing as a learning tool, and how to respond constructively to students verbally and in writing. They are familiar with Blackboard and can foster and monitor discussion groups there.

SERVICE LEARNING PROGRAM:
The Service Learning (SL) Program works as a resource for faculty, students, and community agencies by hosting workshops, campus-community events, and sponsoring funding opportunities. The SL Program can help in a variety of areas: curriculum development, community contacts, student placements, and professional development. The
SL website can link you to a wealth of information on service learning, such as nation-wide service learning websites, lists of community agencies, curriculum information, funding possibilities, service learning publications, plus upcoming service learning events.

FACULTY READING ROOM, BROWN-BAG LUNCHES, & DROP-IN CENTER:
We maintain a collection of books, periodicals, reports, videotapes, and other materials related to teaching and learning in our Faculty Reading Room. Topics of interest include classroom assessment techniques, collaborative teaching strategies, how diversity enriches learning, mentoring, and connections between the classroom and our global community. Faculty may drop by the Faculty Center to browse through these materials, use the video player, check out materials for a week at a time, or simply have a cup of coffee and some conversation. We sponsor weekly brown-bag lunches for informal conversations about teaching and learning.

STIPENDS & AWARDS FOR TEACHING:
The OFD/FaCET provides information about and distribution of Requests For Proposals (RFPs) when special opportunities for stipends for travel or other funding for projects related to teaching and learning are available.
In addition, the OFD/FaCET coordinates awards for exceptional contributions to teaching and student learning at Cal State East Bay.
