Gender in the Arts, Literature, and Society
Examine the traditions and changing expectations of the genders in the arts, literature, and theatre. Using various media, we will read, write, discuss, present, listen to lectures and panel presentations, watch plays, videos and slides, and perform on the issues of gender. Vive la difference? The three discipline courses are: Modern Languages and Literatures 1104- Gender in Francophone Literature and Culture - Gender issues in the francophone cultures of Europe, Africa, the Caribbean, Asia, and Quebec through literature and the arts. Theatre 1011 -All the World's a Stage - Gender in the Arts - How diverse cultures throughout history have created theatre and art; how representative artists have mirrored the concerns of their times especially concerning gender; and how theatre artists interpret their art. (Number change in Spring 2001 was formerly Theatre 1010-10) Philosophy 1101 -Contemporary Social and Ethnical Issues- Topics of contemporary concern, e.g. human rights, roots of social injustice, affirmative action, sexism and racism. The above courses are offered every quarter and you must register for a different one each quarter.
