Science in the 21st Century

The theme of "Science in the 21st Century" will be to unify the future role and direction of science as it relates to humans and the world around us. The scientific breakthroughs in the 20th century in the areas of Biology, Psychology, and Physics will be reviewed. Using the 20th century as a base, this theme will explore what directions of advances can be expected in the 21st century. Topics such as genetics and DNA technology, recent advances in understanding everyday human behavior and deviations from normal behavior, and optical electronics and high energy physics will be covered.

The three discipline courses are:

Biology 2003- Biology in the 21st Century - Basic biological principles including scientific method, basic chemistry, cell structure and function, energy flow and use, reproduction, genetics, evolution, ecology. Not for biology major or minor credit. Not open to students with credit for BIOL 1001.

Psychology 2009 - General Psychology - An introduction to the scientific study of basic processes underlying human and animal behavior; sensation and perception, learning and thinking, motivation, and emotion.

Physics 2021 - Physics in the 21st Century - A descriptive survey of state-of-the-art topics in physics, projected research, and their impact on life in the 21st century. Topics selected from such areas as atomic physics, astrophysics, optical engineering, high-energy and particle physics, telecommunication, nuclear science, and
condensed matter. Not for physics major credit.
