California

In the theme of "California", geogrpahy, landforms, and climate sytems will be used as a framework for discussing biological organisms, ecological relationships, geologic processes and enveironmental problems of the state. The course sequence begins by introducing biolgoical systems and how they function, with an emphasis on California plants and animals. The second course in the sequence covers California's rocks, minerals, landfroms, and geologic processes in light of human needs and impacts. The final course in the sequence will bring together biological and geological ideas pertaining to pressing environmental problems of the state.

The three discipline courses are:

Biology 2004- Natural History of Calfiornia - Introduction to natural history of California with special emphasis on biogeography and evolution of plant communities and their associated biota, endemic speicies, unique habitats, convervation topics, including water use and distribution, development of wild lands, fire ecology, human impact. Not open for Biology B.S., B.A. or Minor credit. Not open to those with credit for Biology 1001. Some weekend field trips required.

Geology 2000 - Geology of California- The geologic history and development of California. Rocks, minerals, and natural resources. Processes that shape California landforms. Plate tectonics, earthquakes, volcanism. Not for Geology major credit.

Environmental Science 2800- Envrionmental Problems of California- Human impact on the biologic and geologic environment in California. Resource needs, waste issues, species diversity, and ecosystem degradation.
