FAQsNEW VOICE MAIL SYSTEM FOR CSUEB

Q.  Are the Hayward and Concord campuses getting a new voice mail system?

A.  Yes!  The University has CallXpress Voice Mail System that is live.  This new system will not affect the Oakland Center voice mail.  They will continue to use their current system.

Q. Why did we replace the previous Voice Mail system with a new one?

A. Hardware and software maintenance was no longer available for the old system and we were in danger of unexpected, unrepairable failure at any time. In fact, we experienced several unexpected hardware failures in July and August, but our staff was fortunately able to correct the problems even though vendor assistance was not available. A more serious hardware or software problem could not have been resolved without vendor support. Our new system has sustainable long term vendor support and a significantly longer expected life than the old system.

Q. Are options/choices similar in navigating through the new CallXpress system as they are on the old system (Com Works)?

A.  Yes and No.  Some are similar and some are not.  You will need to listen to all options in order to make the correct choice for what you are trying to do.  Example:  In the old system you chose "3" to delete and on the new system you would choose "7" to delete.  With the new system the options are very similar to our Cingular cell phone service that many staff/faculty currently use.

Q.  Can I use the same password/security code on the new system that I used on the old system?

A.  Yes, you can assign the same password/security code.  Or if you decide to choose a different security code/password then it must be a minimum of 5 and no more than 15 characters.

Q.  Can I transfer/forward messages from the "old" system to the CallXpress system?

A.  No, we are not able to transfer/forward messages between the systems.  Please retrieve all your messages from the old system before November 3rd.

Q.  When will we be cutting over to the new system?

A.  Important!  We have cut over to the new system as of November 3, 2005 at 9:00 a.m.

Q.  What number do we call to access our voice mail after 9:00 a.m. on 11/3/05?

A.  We will continue to use our standard access number of 5-7020 for on campus and (510) 885-7020 from off campus.

Q.  How will I access my voice mail from off campus?

A.  It's the same procedure as with the current system except you won't hit a "#" sign after you key in your phone number and security code.  If you listen to the attendant it will tell you exactly how to choose to proceed.

Q.  Will we receive any training?

A.  Training user guides and information are available at our Telephone Services website:  www.csueastbay.edu/ics/telsvcs/index.htm This new system is very user friendly and has an automatic attendant that will talk you through the various options like our old system did.  If you need additional help please visit our web site or call Telephone Services staff at 57483 for assistance.

Q.  Why is voice mail giving me the incorrect number of new messages?

A.
When you listen to a message and do not delete or save your message it goes into “All Voice Messages.” The next time you go into your voice mailbox, the system indicates the total number of NEW messages, this includes “Unread Messages” and any messages in the “All Voice Messages” (ones you have listened to but have not saved or deleted). To listen to messages Press 1. Then if you only want the unread messages Press 1. If you want your unread messages along with your all voice messages Press 2. The best way to avoid this is to delete or save the message after you have listened to it.
