Definition of MD1 and MD2 Classes
Beginning Fall 1997, CSUH began two new programs designed
to facilitate the distribution of the loaner laptops to undergraduate
financial aid students. Faculty were asked to indicate if
their classes would require computer access outside of class
time or would require network access outside of class time.
The development of these programs provided a method for CSUH
to offer undergraduate financial aid students access to the
loaner pool without affecting their financial aid funding.
MD1 Classes: Require Computer Access
Outside of Class Time
Classes marked as requiring computer access outside of class
time or MD1 classes set expectations for both the instructor
and the students.
The instructor could expect:
- the students to have unrestricted access to computers
during non-class hours and were able to plan their homework
assignments accordingly
- that the computer would contain standard productivity
software and that the student was familiar with that software.
- the student to have a stand alone computer only
The students could expect:
- that access to computers would be necessary in order
to complete the assignments in the course.
- not to need to have access to the network
- not to have expensive task specific software on their
individual machine.
MD2 Classes: Require network Access
Outside of Class Time
Classes marked as requiring network access outside of class
time or MD2 classes set an additional expectation level for
both instructors and students.
The instructor could expect:
- the student to have access to the network either through
dial-up to the campus or through an Internet Service Provider
- the student to be familiar with one web browser.
- the students to be familiar with search engines and email.
The students could expect:
- a computer was necessary to complete the assignments in
the course and that computer must be able to communicate
with the Internet and browse the web.
In both cases there was an expectation that computer technology
would play an important part in the curriculum and that a
student with limited or no access to the technology would
be at a distinct disadvantage.
During Fall 1997 435 classes were designated as either MD1
or MD2 and during Winter 1998 406 sections were designated
as either MD1 or MD2.
