Prospective Music Major and Graduate Auditions

The Department of Music requires all prospective undergraduate and graduate music majors interested in studying performance to complete an audition on their major instrument/voice. Auditions will be scheduled after students complete the Cal State East Bay Music Department Application Form.

Students for whom distance is prohibitive may send a high quality recording of their audition performance via a link to online digital files (e.g. YouTube, Dropbox, Soundcloud) to All audition materials must be received by April 12, 2019, and auditions completed by January 26 will be considered for a scholarship.

All auditions shall be approximately ten minutes long. All performance applicants must perform two selections, one that demonstrates technical facility and one that is more lyrical in character. The performance should demonstrate accurate rhythms, pitch control, and interpretive awareness.

Voice students auditioning for undergraduate study should prepare two memorized selections to be performed with piano, one of which must be in a language other than English. Art songs, arias, folk songs and musical theatre selections are preferred. An accompanist will be provided. Popular, gospel, and selections sung with a recorded track are not acceptable. Voice students auditioning for graduate study should prepare five memorized selections to be performed with piano. Repertoire suggestions include:

  • Baroque aria (sacred or secular)
  • a song by a German Romantic composer

  • a song by Debussy, Ravel, Faure, Poulenc, Duparc, or Chausson

  • a song composed after 1950

  • an operatic aria in Italian

Piano applicants auditioning for undergraduate study should prepare 2 or 3 works of different style periods, approximately 10 minutes in total, memorized. Repertoire selections could include:

  • a Baroque composition such as Bach Inventions or Sinfonias, a Prelude and Fugue from The Well-Tempered Clavier, 1-2 movements from a French SuiteEnglish Suite, or Partita;
  • a first movement of a classical sonata by Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven, or their contemporaries;
  • a work from the Romantic period (Chopin, Schumann, Brahms, Liszt, etc.);
  • a work from the early 20th century (Debussy, Ravel, Prokofiev, Bartók, etc.) or a work post-1945.

Piano students auditioning for graduate study should prepare representative works from the applicant's Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Music Senior Recital or comparable repertory. Three or four pieces drawn from multiple style periods are expected, including a complete sonata by Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven or contemporaries. Memorization is required. Sight-reading will also be evaluated.

  • Friday - Saturday, January 25 - 26, 2019
  • Friday, April 12, 2019
