UPDATED: May 22, 2009

In response to the swine flu outbreak, the secretary of the Department of Homeland Security declared a public health emergency in the United States April 27, prompting California State University, East Bay to alert the campus community about proactive steps the university has taken regarding the threat along with tips for how to minimize the potential spread of the disease.

Communiqués distributed to all university students, faculty and staff April 27 shared general recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC, www.cdc.gov) about how to remain healthy.

Suggestions include:

  • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. Throw the tissue in the trash after usage;
  • Wash hands often with soap and water, especially after coughing or sneezing. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective;
  • Avoid touching eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread that way;
  • Avoid contact with sick people. Influenza is thought to spread mainly person-to-person through coughing or sneezing by infected people;
  • Disinfect common use surface areas such as counter tops, public phones, and bathrooms, with alcohol, Lysol or bleach-based cleansers;
  • When becoming ill, staying home from work or school and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them;
  • Students who develop more serious flu-like symptoms that include fever (greater than 100 degrees F) and cough and/or sore throat, difficulty breathing or persistent vomiting go the Student Health Services Center, while faculty and staff who develop those symptoms should consult their personal physician.

International travelers are advised to visit www.cdc.gov/travel for updated recommendations.

Dr. Coulman will continue to update the Cal State East Bay community with information from the CDC. Additional information is available at www.cdc.gov/swineflu or by contacting CSUEB Student Health Services at shs@csueastbay.edu or (510) 885-3639.
