Norma Rees, president of California State University, East Bay from 1990 until 2006, died Thursday at age 83.
Rees led the effort in 2004 and 2005 to change the university's name from Cal State Hayward to Cal State East Bay. She also oversaw construction of new buildings on the campus, high in the hills above Hayward — the first new buildings there since 1971. The university added a new home for its college of business and economics during her tenure, and also three new dormitories.
Leroy Morishita, the university's current president, announced Rees' death on Friday.
