Recreation’s reservations desk has a new face

A trip to the Luxor Hotel in Vegas at age 10 got Ryan Cerezo thinking he might like to own a hotel. He never lost that dream, and when he set off from his Tracy home to college at Cal State East Bay, he continued to pursue it, majoring in hospitality, recreation and tourism.

But a funny thing happened on the way to hotel ownership: Cerezo discovered he actually enjoyed recreation.

While in college pursuing the “very broad degree” of his major, Cerezo said, he got an on-campus job at the Recreation Center, where he worked for three years. During that time he worked as a fitness center attendant as well as the assistant coordinator of member services.

He was converted.

“It (the field of recreation) gives you a better chance to be creative,” he said.

And though he did a later stint at the Pleasanton Sheraton, and still thinks he might like to own a small hotel one day, for now it’s all about recreation.

Which is how he landed in Rossmoor. Cerezo is the latest hire in the Recreation Department as of Dec. 2, and his primary function (for now) is the reservations desk. But he is learning all the ropes, from excursions to volunteers to special events.

Outside of work, Cerezo, who lives in San Ramon, likes the simple pleasures of hanging out with friends and family.

Oh, and football. “I’m a big football fan,” he said (both of playing the sport and watching it). He’s a Chargers fan, thanks to his admiration of now-retired Chargers player Ladainian Tomlinson.

But behind the desk in the Recreation Department, Cerezo is enthusiastic about his job and the possibilities it brings. He likes that it’s a customer-service-based position.

“It’s a lot of fun,” he said. “You meet a lot of nice people.”
