CSUEB pitching ace Sean Becker wins 2 honors in leading Pioneers to early success

The 2014 college baseball season has opened in fine fashion for the Cal State East Bay baseball team and its pitching ace Sean Beckerwho has been honored as the top hurler in the NCAA West Region for the first week of the season by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers in the California Collegiate Athletic Association by its voting members. He is the first pitcher named by both organizations for the 2014 season. 

Becker was the opening day starter for the Pioneers in game one of Saturday's (Feb. 1) doubleheader against Oregon Tech. The senior right-hander needed just 63 pitches to shutout opposing batters through the seven inning contest in the Pioneers' 5-0 season opening game. He allowed five hits and struck out three without issuing a walk. 

In 2013 Becker was a second-team All-West Region selection for the season by the NBCWA. For 2014, he has been tabbed as a first-team All-West Region pitcher in preseason voting. One start into his senior season, the San Fernando, Calif. native has a career record of 9-2 with a 2.04 ERA, issuing just 12 walks in 105.2 innings.

Becker and the Pioneers are back in action this weekend against Menlo College. The series begins with a 2 p.m. game on Friday, Feb. 7 at Pioneer Field.

Becker cruised through seven scoreless innings en route to a 5-0 opening-day shutout win over Oregon Tech on Saturday. The San Fernando, Calif. native threw just 63 pitches, scattering five hits and striking out three without issuing a walk to earn his first victory of the year.

The CSUEB senior won the CCAA's Pitcher of the Week award twice during the 2013 season, when he finished 8-2 with a 2.19 ERA and a conference-leading six complete games.
