CSUEB water polo's Marina Nation named WWPA Player of the Week

  • March 6, 2014

Cal State East Bay junior goalkeeper Marrina Nation has been named Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) Player of the Week for games played between Feb. 27 and March 5, as announced by the conference office.

Nation, an Oceanside, Calif. native, led the Pioneer water polo team to a 2-2 record as she posted 50 saves, five assists and seven steals in the four games. Her contributions included a pair of saves on penalty shots.

This is the first WWPA Player of the Week award in Nation's three-year career at CSUEB. She ranks second in the conference with 79 saves on the season and has started all 10 of the team's games. Her play was a key ingredient in a pair of Pioneer wins at the Posada Royale Invitational Tournament in Thousand Oaks on Saturday (March 1) and Sunday (March 2). She notched nine saves as the team pulled out a dramatic 9-7 fourth-quarter victory over Asuza Pacific on the tournament's first day. The goalie then racked up 13 saves in a 14-5 rout of Occidental the following day.

Nation and the Pioneer water polo team are back at home in Pioneer Pool Sunday, Mar. 9, for a doubleheader against Mercyhurst and WWPA rival Sonoma State. The games will be streamed live online at pioneerwebtv.com.
