Explore the significance of music with Cal State East Bay Assistant Professor of Music Peter Marsh.

As cultures change, so does their music. In a lecture titled, "Horses, Fiddles & Song," Marsh will present a case study with an auditory sampling of how music is changing in Mongolia.

First, Marsh will take participants on a journey to the Mongolian countryside for a sampling of the ancient ugsaatny or "rooted" musical traditions. Then it’s off to the Mongolian capital, Ulaanbaatar, to listen to emerging urban musical traditions, the product of both older musical cultures and the tides of modernity.

Marsh's research was a recent blog story, "From the US to Mongolia, CSUEB professor studies the global reach of hip-hop and rap music."

This event is offered as part of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at the Lake Park Retirement Center on April 19 at 2:00pm. Visit the OLLI Web site for more information or to register.
