Karl Schroeder, president of Safeway Northern California Division, will speak on the Cal State East Bay Hayward campus on May 20. Based in Pleasanton, Safeway is a Fortune 100 company and one of the largest food and drug retailers in North America.

Schroeder will speak about "Success in the Middle".  San Jose Mercury News recently reported that Safeway will "combat an aggressive crop of rivals with an expansion that includes nine new stores in the West -- of which six will be in the Bay Area." Schroeder is quoted in the article, "We are not just in a defensive stance. We also are going on offense in terms of building our business and building our market share." He added that Safeway will open more new stores in 2011 than they have in the past four to five years.

Schroeder will also discuss Safeway's management trainee program and retailing as a career. He started working for Safeway more than 30 years ago as a courtesy clerk in one of its Arizona stores. Safeway operates 1,738 stores in the United States and western Canada.

The event will take place Friday, May 20 at 5pm in Valley Business and Technology Center VBT- 124.  For more information, contact Cesar M. Maloles, professor of marketing, at tel: 510-885-2342 or cesar.maloles@csueastbay.edu
