Three students and three alumni will be involved in “WonderSlow,” a 15-hour inclusive community performance at the Frank H. Ogawa Plaza in downtown Oakland June 10.

Directed by Eric Kupers, assistant professor of theatre and dance, and David Ryther, the performance from sunrise to sunset will include work by students Dana DeGuzman, senior in music; Chris Gallegos, junior in art; and Amy LaFaille, senior in theatre and dance; and alumni: Deborah Trudell and Stacz Sadowski, both theatre & dance ’93; Keith Penney, physics ’10; and Corissa Johnson, theatre & dance ’08.

The durational work invokes slowness, time to wonder, and opportunities to connect with each other and our environment – even if just for a moment.

Inspired by stories from Kupers’ family in relation to the Lawrence Ferlinghetti poem, “I am Waiting,” and particularly the line, “I am perpetually awaiting the rebirth of Wonder,” “WonderSlow” will culminate in a ceremonial performance based on Jewish Shabbat rituals.

A wide network of artists and volunteers, as well as spontaneous passersby, will join Dandelion Dancetheater, Kupers’ company, in this work to stage a series of intersecting performance events.

Everyone is invited to watch or take part in the performance on any level they would like.  Each performance event will involve one or more meditative tasks and will be housed in a different area of the Plaza.
