Each week this quarter, students gather together at CSUEB’s American Language Program (ALP) to learn about a particular country’s culture through the ALP Special Hour program. The event, which runs through Nov. 20, takes place from 2 to 3 p.m. on Wednesdays. So far this quarter, ALP students have already showcased China, South Korea and Saudi Arabia. Presentations on Japan and Mexico are scheduled for the upcoming weeks, and the program will end with a traditional American Thanksgiving service.

“This is a great opportunity to talk about my country in English and practice my (English) skills,” said ALP student Mohammed Alsaeed, who recently presented alongside fellow ALP-student Essa Aldayel on their country Saudi Arabia to a group of approximately 50 students.

During presentations, two to three students share information on the country they are from, including the country’s location, major religions, clothing attire and lifestyle. Students also get to sample cuisine inspired by the country’s traditional fare.

CSUEB’s ALP offers a range of high-quality programs for students from all over the world, including diploma, certificate and graduate preparation programs, in addition to the Intensive English Program.

Although the majority of students in attendance are part of ALP’s Intensive English Program, the event is open to all students interested in expanding their cultural awareness.
