ASI pushes for rec center
- June 1, 2007
The Associated Students board is drumming up support for a student-financed recreation and wellness center on the Hayward campus with a series of open forums and a petition drive.
At the urging of the Associated Students, a campus recreation and wellness committee hired Cannon Design to perform a center feasibility study. The architecture and construction management firm has built university recreation and sports complexes throughout the United States including the RIMAC Center at UC San Diego.
An ASI survey conducted during March drew 1,148 responses, 1,050 of them from students. From those surveys and discussion forums, a vision of what a rec center at Cal State East Bay would look like has emerged.
The center would include:
• a juice bar
• a 2 court basketball gym
• an indoor jogging track
• a fitness center (with all the equipment)
• a group fitness room
• an office for intramural and club sports
• a special events office
• a conference room
• locker rooms and showers
• a wellness center (with trainer,
health educator, massage therapist, and
• an outdoor adventure center
The cost of the center would work out to about $5 a week, said ASI Chair Chantel Johnson. In 2007-08, students would pay a fee of $25 per quarter for the center. The fee would gradually increase to $65 per quarter by 2014.
Students who are only registered for classes at the Concord Campus would be exempt from paying the fees, Johnson said. Faculty and staff who use the center facilities would pay what students pay plus a few additional dollars.
Associated Students began holding forums for different student groups on May 26. Upcoming forums will be held
