- New Training Requirements for NSF Grant Applicants
Each institution applying for financial assistance from the National Science Foundation (NSF) for science and engineering research as well as education is subject to a new training requirement. The new requirement is pursuant to Section 7009 of the America Creating Opportunities to Meaningfully Promote Excellence in Technology, Education, and Science (America COMPETES) Act. Specifically, all NSF proposals must include a plan to provide appropriate training and oversight in the “responsible and ethical conduct of research” to all involved parties including; undergraduate students, graduate students, and postdoctoral researchers participating in the research project. The requirements are in two sections of Title VII which authorizes NSF funding: Section 7008 – Postdoctoral research fellows, and Section 7009 – Responsible conduct of research. For more information, go to http://science.house.gov/. The full article is available at http://ori.dhhs.gov/documents/newsletters/vol15_no4.pdf in the Office of Research Integrity’s September, 2007 newsletter. General Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) training resources, including training on ethics, are accessible at http://ori.dhhs.gov/education/products/rcr_general.shtml.
- Please note that ALL International travel requires President Qayoumi’s approval. This includes travel associated with research and sponsored programs. Any faculty or staff member with international travel incorporated into research plans (such as the budget) need to be aware of this requirement. Once a project has been awarded, please work with the CSUEB Foundation to complete the Foundation’s “Travel Pre-Approval & Claim Form” and indicate that international travel is involved when submitting. The Foundation will take the form to the President for his review and approval.
The form can be downloaded from the Foundation’s forms page: http://www.csueastbay.edu/foundation/forms.html
