Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System (STARS)

A program of AASHE, the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System™ (STARS®) is a transparent, self-reporting framework for colleges and universities to measure their sustainability performance. STARS is intended to engage and recognize the full spectrum of colleges and universities—from community colleges to research universities, and from institutions just starting their sustainability programs to long-time campus sustainability leaders. STARS encompasses long-term sustainability goals for already high-achieving institutions as well as entry points of recognition for institutions that are taking first steps toward sustainability.

STARS Participants use the STARS Technical Manual as a guide for collecting specific data points as they relate to the following four categories:

  1. Academics

  2. Engagement

  3. Operations

  4. Planning & Administration

Collected data is then entered into the STARS Reporting Tool for tracking. Once data submission is complete, the institution may submit the data. This information is then publicly posted to the STARS website as a comprehensive STARS Report and a STARS Rating is awarded to the institution.

CSUEB is a registered STARS Participant. Data collection underway and is being coordinated by the Office of Sustainability with the support of classes, student assistants, and the Campus Sustainability Committee.
