Introduction and Description
The University signature mark combines the University seal and logo in two fixed configurations, one horizontal ("landscape") and one vertical ("portrait"). The relative size, proportions, and spatial relationships of the seal and logo elements in the signature mark are based on a formula designed to combine and display the two elements in a harmonious and appropriately balanced manner. The signature mark is the primary and most commonly used component of the University's visual identity system and is appropriate and effective for the widest range of University print and electronic communications.
Graphic Communications Attributes
The signature mark combines the attributes of its two components — the University seal and the logo — producing an identity graphic that communicates the institution's name clearly and boldly, expresses stature and confidence, and also provides visual cues that suggest academic quality, prestige, and heritage. The result is a brand expression that is contemporary, relevant, and lively, yet also expressive of academic and institutional gravitas.
Signature Mark Color Variations & Reproduction
The signature mark may be reproduced and displayed in the following colorways:
— Black and white, which may only be display on a white background
— Gray, as a 40% screen of black, which may be displayed only on a white background.
— Two colors (black and red), in which California State University" and the horizontal line that underscores "University" is black, the words "East Bay" are red (PMS 199 or C/0, M/100, Y/65, K/0), and the seal is either black or gray (a 40% screen of black). These versions may be displayed only on white backgrounds.
— Full color (CYMK), in which "California State University" and the horizontal line that underscores "University" is black, the words "East Bay" are red (PMS 199/match), and the seal is full color. This version may be displayed only on white, East Bay Olive, or East Bay Gold backgrounds.
— Full color (CYMK), in which "California State University" and the horizontal line that underscores "University" are “knocked out” in white, "East Bay" is red (PMS 199/match), and the seal is full color. This version may be displayed only on black, Bayview Blue, East Bay Bronze, East Bay Silver, Steel Blue, or Evergreen backgrounds.
— Foil embossed in black, white, or gold, or reproduced using metallic gold (PMS 872) ink.
Signature Mark Sizing
The signature mark should never be reproduced smaller than one and one-half inches in length.
Signature Mark Display and Space Reservations
The signature mark should be displayed within an area free of other graphic or design elements and type that may compete with or distract from it. This area should be a minimum of the measurement of the height of the word "University" as displayed, projected from all edges of the signature mark.
The signature mark is the preferred institutional identifier for use on University communications designed to reach broad, general audiences. This includes University publications, business forms, signage, advertising, flyers, and posters, in which the signature mark's combination of the seal and logo is particularly effective in communicating the widest range of University brand attributes. Use of the signature mark for casual applications including emblematic items (such as mugs, pens, key rings, athletic items) is also appropriate and encouraged. Applications that common sense suggests might in any way demean, disparage, or degrade the image and prestige of the institution are expressly forbidden.
- The signature mark may be used alone on University communications.
- Use only one signature mark on any one surface of your layout, and never combine or display the signature mark with the seal or logo on the same page or surface. Exceptions to this seal usage rule are (1) when the seal is blind-embossed (no color) on the same surface or only partially displayed in a manner that suggests a "watermark."
- In general, all three CSUEB identity elements should not be used in the same document.

These graphic files are for use in creating common office documents and provide high-quality printing from your personal/office desktop printer. Office publication software includes but is not limited to Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Publisher.
CSUEB Signature Marks for Professional Print Production (EPS)
These graphic files are designed for professional design and printing projects. They are in EPS (Encapsulated Post Script) format saved down to Adobe Illustrator Version 10 for the PC and should only be handled by graphic designers, vendors, and other professionals familiar with EPS files. The files can be viewed and applied using advanced graphics software such as PageMaker, In-Design, Quark, and Photoshop.
CSUEB Signature Marks for Web Applications (GIF)
These graphic files should be used for the Web only. Using these files for printed material will result in poor quality, low resolution reproductions.
The California State University, East Bay signature mark is a trademark of the University, and its use for commercial or outside noncommercial uses purposes must be officially approved by the University’s licensing agent, the Office of University Communications.
