Class Pass: Managing Wildfires

12:30–1 p.m. PT

Large wildfires continue to burn across the western United States. The National Interagency Fire Center reported that large fires had burned nearly 4.1 million acres in California alone in 2020.

Wildfires not only scorch millions of acres each year but also destroy thousands of homes and cloak cities in unhealthy levels of smoke. California is experiencing wildfires of abnormal size and severity.

But it wasn’t always this way. Indigenous Californians have used cultural burns to mitigate wildfire spread, improve species abundance, and enhance resource quality since time immemorial. However, colonial fire exclusion policies and native land dispossession have hindered the application of cultural fire.

Dr. Marks-Block, an assistant professor of Anthropology, Geography, and Environmental Studies, will cover the importance of cultural burns and how they can help California manage wildfires.

Sandwich Generation Issues: Avoiding Heartache & Creating a Legacy

Long-term planning is especially important for people in the “sandwich generation,” as they care for their aging parents (or other relatives) and perhaps children as well. What documents are needed for different stages of life? This session will help people identify solutions to estate planning questions so you can arrange in advance for smooth transitions across a range of situations that families may encounter.

Marketing Connect: The Business of Storytelling

2:45 p.m. • Online

One of the fastest-growing specialty skill sets in marketing today is storytelling- the ability to connect the product, the sales force, and the customer with one compelling narrative. In this session, we’ll take a look at the expanding field of storytelling in marketing, how it is applied in large organizations, and how you can identify trends to keep your career a step ahead.

Joe Gura is the Storytelling Lead for Microsoft Teams marketing. An alumni of Cal State East Bay (BA, 2002), and West Virginia University (MS, 2015), Joe has spent the past 15 years in technology marketing, after a 10-year career in broadcasting.
