As of Spring 2017, CBE starts its Undergraduate Mentoring Program. Any CBE undergraduate student can choose to have one mentor. Interested students may submit the online interest form. The mentors can be either full-time or part-time faculty members. At the start of a mentoring relationship, and at its end, the faculty mentor must inform Whitney Fraleigh ( in the CBE Office of Undergraduate Advising.

A faculty mentor can:

  • provide guidance on paths to graduate school
  • provide career advising
  • help students to advance their learning in general (beyond the mentor’s normal teaching responsibilities)
  • refer students to appropriate campus resources (according to student needs) as shown in the following table:

A faculty mentor is NOT required to provide:

  • advising on general education or graduation requirements, but should refer students to Academic Advising & Career Education in SA 2300. They can be reached via email at or at (510) 885-3621.
  • advising on major/option requirements, but should refer students to the Office of Undergraduate Advising in VBT 129. They can be reached via email at or at (510) 885- 3323.

Normally, the advising should be conducted either through email (using the student’s CSU East Bay horizon email address only), or in the faculty member’s office during office hours or appointment hours. If you have any questions about other mentoring activities or mentoring in general, please consult with your department chair or the dean’s office.
