The Hidden Cost$ of College Sports

On April 24, 2013 the CSSJ hosted a panel discussion of “The Hidden Costs of College Sports” in the University Theatre.

Panel participants included Cindy J. Chang, M.D., Team USA Chief Medical Officer for the 2012 Olympic Games in London; Billy Hawkins, Ph.D. from the University of Georgia and author of The New Plantation: Black Athletes, College Sports & Predominantly White NCAA Institutions; and Murray Sperber, Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley, and author of Beer & Circus: How Big-Time College Sports is Crippling Undergraduate Education.

This panel discussion covered a wide range of issues surrounding Division I college sport, including student-athlete health and safety, player rights, racism, and economic tensions in funding college sport, as well as institutional responses and consequences.
