Ya-Liang Chang, D.M.A./NCTM, is a pedagogue, adjudicator, and pianist. Dr. Chang has received invitations and presented pedagogy workshops at both national and international conferences that included various Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) State Conferences, Music Teachers’ Association of California (MTAC) Convention and Branch Programs, CSUEB Piano Pedagogy Symposiums as well as the International Society for Music Education 31st World Conference. Her most well-known Fundamental Techniques workshop series has been featured frequently in both conferences and seminars.

In addition to presenting workshops, Dr. Chang teaches pedagogy seminars regularly for teachers’ organizations including a three-year piano pedagogy sequence for the MTAC Santa Clara Branch. Dr. Chang also writes a music education blog www.changpiano.com which provides teaching ideas and resources to teachers. 

As a seasoned adjudicator, Dr. Chang has frequently adjudicated at a variety of events such as the MTNA affiliated states collegiate and pre-college competitions and concerto competitions, Miami University Music Department concerto competitions, and the Tri State concerto competition. Her students have won numerous awards in both regional and international competitions that included the Pelican International Music Competition for  Young Artists, the United States Open Music Competition, California Association of Professional Music Teachers (CAPMT) Honors Competition, and the Royal Conservatory of Music Certificate State and Center excellence. 

As a solo and collaborative pianist, Dr. Chang has performed in the United States, Italy,  Germany, and Taiwan. She was the winner and recipient of the IBLA Grand Prize and International Piano Competition in Italy and the Bayreuth Summer Festival in Germany. Her concert highlights included solo recitals with the IBLA Foundation in Italy and the Steinway & Sons Premier Piano Artist Concert Series; and collaborative recitals at NKU/OhioMTA Winter Pedagogy Conference and Music at Ascension Concert Series. 

Dr. Chang teaches at Cal State East Bay as a Lecturer of Piano. Prior to her post at CSUEB, she has taught on the piano faculty at Northern Kentucky University School of the Arts Music Program for 13 years and received distinguished Faculty Special Recognition twice. 

Dr. Chang holds a D.M.A. degree in Piano Performance from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music and an M.M. degree in Piano Performance from the Boston Conservatory. She has studied piano from master teachers of both German and Russian schools that included professors Elizabeth and Eugene Pridonoff, Janice Weber, and Sergei Polusmiak.
