Megan  Cherewick, PhD

Dr. Cherewick received her PhD in International Health from Johns Hopkins University and her MPH, BA and BFA from the University of Michigan. Prior to joining the Department of Health Sciences at CSUEB, she held a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of California, Berkeley. Her areas of interest include global health and health in humanitarian emergencies, child and adolescent development, psychosocial support interventions and evaluation, and, risk and resilience research.

Dr. Cherewick's professional research interests are focused on the identification of risk and resilience processes that impact mental health and developmental trajectories of children, youth and families exposed to concentrated adversity.  She is experienced in applied cross-cultural research in low resource contexts and in humanitarian emergences and has over a decade of experience working in the field of Global Health. Dr. Cherewick's work has included improving health service delivery in rural Rwanda, estimating morbidity and mortality following the Haitian earthquake, evaluation of risk and protective factors for mental health and well-being among conflict-affected youth involved in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and, identification of resilience enhancing factors among orphans in Tanzania.   Dr. Cherewick specializes in mixed-method research and evaluation and is interested in the intersections of intervention and evaluation science.  Dr. Cherewick leads the evaluation of a project at the University of California Berkeley, Discover, which seeks to translate developmental neuroscience to improve the health and well-being of very young adolescents in Tanzania.
