Free Books and other Course Materials Program

Welcome to Spring 2022

Fall 2021 and Spring 2022 first-year freshmen will receive free required books and other course materials for Fall 2021 and Spring 2022 semesters. Spring 2022 continuing students who were first-time freshmen in Fall 2020 or Spring 2021 semesters will also be eligible for this program.

Eligible students will receive an email from the university with details on how to receive your required books and other course materials from the Pioneer Bookstore. Here are some key dates to keep in mind for Fall 2021 semester:

  • Deadline for Fall semester rental returns/convert to purchase: December 13, 2021

  • Enrollment for Spring 2022 classes begins November 1, 2021. Students eligible for this program, including new freshmen entering the university for the first time in Spring 2022 do not need to purchase their required textbooks. Details will be delivered soon to your Horizon email address.

Frequently asked questions- How the program works

Do not place any orders for your required textbooks; starting in January 2022 the Pioneer Bookstore will prepare your order automatically. Please note that if you drop or add courses, your book order will be updated accordingly and an update will be sent to your Horizon email address.

Access to digital required books will be provided to you via BryteWave; you will receive a notification to your Horizon email once they become available. For physical books, you will receive an email notifying you when they are ready for pick-up (pickup begins January 10th).

Required books will be provided free of charge, however you are responsible for return the materials for courses you have dropped. If you have a physical book for a course you have dropped, you must return the book within two weeks to avoid non-return fees. Physical books can either be returned to the bookstore in person, or shipped back to the bookstore at the address below. Digital books will be automatically revoked within 48 hours of dropping the class.

All physical book rentals from Fall 2021 semester must be returned to the Pioneer Bookstore by Monday, December 13th, 2021. This rental due date will also be stated on the receipt that comes with your physical textbook(s).

Recommended course materials are not included in this program. Recommended or suggested course materials and supplies can be found by looking up the course number on the bookstore website.

If you would like to review and purchase these additional materials, please visit https://csuebshop.com. Scroll down and select "Spring Semester 2022" from the dropdown menu in the "Get Your Textbooks" section. You will then be prompted to enter your courses. Once your courses have been entered, click the "Find Materials" button and a list of required and recommended materials will appear on screen.

As a reminder do not purchase any required materials as they will be provided free of charge.

For Spring 2022, physical books will be available for pick up or shipped to your requested address beginning January 10, 2022.

To pick up your books, please visit the Pioneer Bookstore on the Hayward Campus, during Store Hours. Please wait until you’ve received your “ready for pickup" email before coming to pick up your materials. When picking up your books, you will need to provide a photo ID (preferably BayCard).

Please note: For the safety of our campus community, visitors are required to wear face coverings and maintain social distancing of at least six feet while on campus.

To have your books shipped directly to you, please follow the directions below.

Visit the Pioneer Bookstore website at this address.

  • Click “Add to Bag”, and a pop-up will appear. From there select View Bag And Check
    Out.”

  • After reviewing the items in your bag, select "Check Out" on the right-hand side of the screen, this will bring you to the checkout page.
    • At this point you will be prompted to either create an account or continue as a guest. We highly recommend that you create an account as this will allow you to track orders more easily.

  • After creating an account, click Proceed to Delivery Method” and select “Ship to an
    Address.”
    • Enter the address you would like your items to be shipped to. Please review the address carefully to ensure that your materials are not lost in transit. Once you are done select “Proceed to Payment Method”
  • In the payment method section, select "Bookstore Accounts" and enter your NetID. You will be given a list of accounts to choose from, you must select "Freshmen Access Shipping-Spring 2022" to avoid charges for this shipment.

  • Final Step! Select "Place Order" to complete this transaction.
    • Once your transaction is complete an order number will appear on your screen; please keep this order number for your records.

You will receive an email from "BryteWave" to your Horizon email account once your digital books become available. Be sure to login to your Brytewave account using the link provided inside the email to access your eBooks.

If you do not receive an email from BryteWave, but believe you should have digital textbooks, go to https://brytewave.redshelf.com and log in using your Horizon email account and your password. If you do not know your password, select "Forgot Password" and enter your Horizon email address. Login details will be sent to that email.

Yes, the Pioneer Bookstore will provide the required textbooks for classes you add until the drop/add deadline.

The Pioneer Bookstore will automatically create a new order as you add classes. If a digital book is available for the class, you should receive it within 48 hours of adding the course. If physical books are used for the class, your order will be processed within 48 hours or as soon as the book becomes available.

If you drop a class with a digital book, access to the book will be revoked within 48 hours. If you have a physical book for a course you drop, you must return the book within two weeks to avoid non-return fees. The books can either be brought back to the bookstore in person or shipped back to the bookstore at the address below:

The rental textbooks you received for the Fall 2021 semester must be returned to the Pioneer Bookstore no later than Monday, December 13, 2021.

In addition, you are responsible for any physical books you've received for a course you drop. Materials for a course you have dropped must be returned within two weeks to avoid non-return charges. Please note that books that are not returned may result in a charge on your student financial account.

Rented textbooks can be returned to the bookstore in person OR shipped back to the bookstore at the address below. Hours and contact information for the bookstore can be found here.

When returning rented textbooks by mail, be sure to address all packages to “Pioneer Bookstore” and include your name and contact information inside the package.

The free textbook program does not include course supplies such as art materials or lab equipment. If an item is not available from the bookstore, such as specialized third-party software or video simulations, contact your professor for help.

The Pioneer Bookstore is working with Accessibility Services to provide students with alternative media. If you prefer to own your rented textbooks, please contact the Pioneer Bookstore to convert your rental to a purchase. The deadline to convert a rental book to a purchase is Monday, December 13, 2021 for the Fall 2021 semester.

The value of the books and course materials will be posted on your financial aid award package.
