Free Textbooks for New Freshmen

Welcome to Cal State East Bay!

It is a pleasure to welcome you to our Pioneer Community. As you begin your academic journey with us, we would like to support you by providing you with free required books and instructional materials for the Fall 2020 and Spring 2021 semesters.  

The process of acquiring your books is easy.  Simply register for your classes, and our Pioneer Bookstore will order your required books and instructional materials. Please note that through this program, e-books or book rentals will be made available to you whenever possible.  The book rental option will require you to return your books at the end of the semester. You will receive details on how to return books when you receive them.

You must choose whether you wish to pick up your books and instructional materials or whether you prefer to have them mailed to you.

To pickup your books:

If you choose to pick up your books, you may do so beginning August 10, 2020 in front of the Pioneer Bookstore on the Hayward campus. Pick up will be available Monday through Friday from 10am to 3pm. Please bring a photo ID and a copy of your order confirmation, which will be sent to your Horizon email account. Please note that you are required to wear face coverings while you are on campus.

To have your books delivered:

If you would like your books shipped directly to you, please choose this option at the following link to provide your shipping information.  Please provide your current shipping address to ensure we send your books to the correct address. If you prefer to have your books shipped, you must submit your shipping request by September 4, 2020.

Frequently Asked Questions

You do not need to order your required books on the Pioneer Bookstore website. The Pioneer Bookstore will order your books and instructional materials based on the courses in which you are registered on August 2, 2020. If your schedule changes, your book order will be updated accordingly and you will need to return any books or other materials you do not need based on your updated schedule. 

If you drop a class with a digital book, access to the book will be revoked within 24 hours. If you have a physical book for a course you drop, you must return the book within two weeks to avoid non-return fees. The books can either be brought back to the  bookstore in person or shipped back to the bookstore at the address below:

Required books and instructional materials in digital format will be provided to you via your Horizon student email account. Physical books (rentals) will be available for pickup or shipping beginning August 10, 2020. 

All physical book rentals must be returned to the Pioneer Bookstore by Monday, December 14, 2020 for the Fall 2020 semester. This rental due date will also be stated on the receipt that comes with your physical textbook(s).

 

Other recommended or suggested course materials and supplies can be found by looking up the course number on the bookstore website. These items may be purchased at https://csuebshop.com

Digital textbooks will be available to you as early as two weeks prior to the start of classes. Information for accessing your digital books will be sent to your Horizon student email account once your order has been processed.

Physical books will be available for pickup beginning August 10, 2020 or may be shipped to your current address after you register for classes. If you would like your books shipped directly to you, please choose this option at the following link to provide your shipping information.  Please provide your current shipping address to ensure we send your books to the correct address. The deadline to request shipment of your required books is Friday, September 4, 2020.

The Pioneer Bookstore will provide the required textbooks for courses you add until the drop/add deadline (August 31 for the Fall 2020 semester). 

The Pioneer Bookstore will automatically create a new order as you add classes. If a digital book is available for the class, you should receive it within 24 hours of adding the course. If physical books are used for the class, your order will be processed within 48 hours.

The physical rental books you receive for the fall semester must be returned to the Pioneer Bookstore by Monday, December 14, 2020. Also any physical books you received for a course you drop, must be returned within two weeks to avoid non-return charges. Please note that books that are not returned may result in a charge on your student financial account.

Rented textbooks can be returned to the bookstore in person OR shipped back to the bookstore at the address below. Hours and contact information for the bookstore can be found here.

When returning rented textbooks by mail be sure to address all packages to “Pioneer Bookstore” and include your name and contact information inside the package.

The free textbook program does not include course supplies such as art materials or lab equipment. If an item is not available from the bookstore, such as specialized third party software or video simulations, contact your professor for help.

The Pioneer Bookstore is working with Accessibility Services to provide students with alternative media. If you prefer to own your rented textbooks, please contact the Pioneer Bookstore to convert your rental to a purchase. The deadline to convert a rental book to a purchase is Monday, December 14, 2020 for the Fall 2020 semester.

The value of this voucher for book and instructional materials will be posted on your financial aid award package.
