A two-part series of performances by Bay Area dance companies will lead off Cal State East Bay’s summertime Theatre and Dance Department offerings. William Shakespeare’s “As You Like It” and two student artist programs will follow, all at the Studio Theatre on the Hayward campus, 25800 Carlos Bee Blvd., 94542.
Thao Nguyen will present a solo story of conflict between her family life and her Queer life Aug. 1 at 8 p.m. She has said that the secret to keeping your family happy is keeping your other family a secret.
Alumna Dawn Monique Williams directs the production of “As You Like It” Aug. 10, 11, 17 and 18 at 8 p.m., and Aug. 19 at 2 p.m. The Shakespeare classic deals with betrayal, cross-dressing, romance and wrestling, and Williams' lean, romantic adaptation will be infused with dance.
A student artist series will complete the summer programs. Recital A at 4 p.m. Aug. 22 will present performance art dealing with sex, race and body politics. Recital B, at noon Aug. 29, articulates identity through oral interpretation.
There will be limited seating for all of the summer performances. Tickets for the programs by the professional dance companies will be $10, $7 and $5. The price of “As You Like It” will be $15, 10 and $5; and admission for the student series will be $1 online or free at the door for CSUEB students, and $3 for all others.
Tickets may be purchased at csueastbaytickets.com. Tickets may also be reserved at email@example.com (requires ticket purchase at the door at least 30 minutes before the show).
