CSUEB CANVAS MIGRATION

Our campus is adopting Canvas by Instructure as our new Learning Management System (LMS). East Bay, along with six other CSU campuses are making this migration to fulfill the Chancellor’s Office directive for one common CSU Learning Management System. Online Campus is committed to assisting faculty and students with the transition. We recognize that a change to a new LMS is not a trivial undertaking, especially coming out of a pandemic. Please return to this page for continued updates of our progress, and for resources that will facilitate the move to Canvas.

 

 

Why Canvas?

In conformance with the Governor's higher education budget proposal of 2020, and the final budget revision, all CSU’s, UC’s, and CCC’s are required to use one common learning management system. The Chancellor's office has informed the campuses that funding has been provided and all CSU campuses are committed to move to Canvas by 2023-24.

Content Creation

Canvas is a dynamic LMS similar to Blackboard in its capabilities. Yes, we will have access to the tools that we use now that are integrated into Blackboard via an external link (LTI integration).

Activities using the tools that are native to Blackboard like Wikis, Journals, and Blogs will be migrated to Canvas in the form of an Assignment.

Other Assignments and Discussion Forums come to Canvas configured very closely to its Blackboard predecessor.

As of April 7, instructors are able to log in to Canvas using the link csueb.instructure.com

You will have access to migrated courses in Canvas and the “Canvas Commons” (shared content) by the end of April. In the meantime, you can search the public pages of the Canvas Commons.

So far, pictures and links that are migrated with BB course content are coming over reliably.  If video settings are set to “anyone with the link can view,” these should also display and play.

The Canvas Content Editor allows for source code entries.

Migration

There will be many channels of communications for our students, faculty and staff. We will be updating you frequently on the progress of each phase of the migration. CSUEB will be working with experienced consultants who have completed other Canvas migrations, so we have confidence that this process will be well planned and executed.

ORG’s and Master courses will migrate with Semester Courses. ORGs will be migrated into Canvas courses. (Still testing formatting possibilities for ORG’s moving forward.)

All the courses that you currently see in your "Courses" area in Blackboard will be converted and migrated to Canvas with the assistance of a contractor/vendor (K16). Earlier courses that have been archived can be restored and migrated on demand.

Faculty will start using Canvas in Summer 2022 if they are part of the Pilot. The courses from Blackboard will be migrated by the end of April 2022.

We are now accepting requests from Colleges, Departments, and individual Faculty for when to Go Live in Canvas.

Go Live in Canvas Selector  Now Available

You can now log in to the selector with your Net ID and Password to choose which term your courses go live in Canvas.

Here are important things to know about making the "Go Live in Canvas" choice:

  • Once you choose a semester to go live in Canvas, all your courses for that semester, and all your future courses will remain in Canvas.
  • If your College (or Department) has made an “All Courses to Move by XYZ” decision, your courses will move with the department.
  • Deans and Department Chairs have access to a feature in this tool to make department selections for moving to Canvas.
  • Summer Pilot opt-in will have a cut off date of May 16, 2022
  • Fall 2022 opt-in will have a cut off date of August 1, 2022

Yes, you will see your courses until Blackboard shuts down (until end 2023).

Absolutely! As long as the course maintains its alignment and quality essentials. See QM certification policy.

We can’t confirm this yet, but we will be looking into it.

Tests & Assignments

Our initial testing from course migration shows BB “Tests” (aka quizzes, exams) move to Canvas “Quizzes” with questions intact. There are several BB question types not available in Quizzes. (Still testing for these)

There are extensive help documents and videos available for students, and we are checking the accessibility ratings of them.

Faculty Training

Yes! As soon as the course configurations are set up in Canvas the OC team will be providing customized CSUEB training. In the meantime you can refer to the Canvas Instructor Guides- but keep in mind all the features might not be the same!

Yes- Canvas technical Support is available 24/7. Faculty and students will have access to both Blackboard and Canvas support channels until Blackboard shuts down in Spring 2024. Then there will only be Canvas Support.
