Biography

John Eros is Coordinator of Music Education and Graduate Studies, as well as Credential Program Advisor for the music department at Cal State East Bay. He holds a BM in Music Education from Northwestern University, where he studied trumpet with Vincent Cichowicz, an MA in the Pedagogy of Music Theory from the Eastman School of Music, and a PhD in Music Education from the University of Michigan. Dr. Eros has completed certification levels in Orff, Kodály, and Music Learning Theory (Gordon).

Dr. Eros has presented at state, regional, national, and international conferences, including the national conferences for the National Association for Music Education (NAfME) and the American Educational Research Association (AERA), as well as the Symposium on Music Teacher Education (SMTE), New Directions in Music Education, the Suncoast Music Education Research Symposium, and the Colloquium for Teachers of Instrumental Music Methods (IMTE). He has published research in the Journal of Research in Music Education, Bulletin of the Council for Research in Music Education, Journal of Music Teacher Education, Arts Education Policy Review, Contributions to Music Education, Research Studies in Music Education, Update: Applications of Research in Music Education, and Music Education Research International. Additional recent publications include book chapters in the Handbook of Qualitative Research in American Music Education (2014, Oxford), Curriculum and Assessment in Music Education (2015, GIA) and The Oxford Handbook of Preservice Music Teacher Education in the United States (Oxford, 2019).

Dr. Eros taught band and general music in the Chicagoland area between 1997 and 2005, including the Chicago Public Schools (CPS). While in CPS, Eros designed general music curricula and initiated band programs at two inner-city K-8 schools, and won numerous grants from organizations such as the Chicago Foundation for Education, the Oppenheimer Foundation, and the Milagro Foundation. Dr. Eros has also taught music education courses as a faculty member at Adrian College (Adrian, MI) and Concordia University (Ann Arbor, MI).

Dr. Eros currently serves as the California representative for the Society of Music Teacher Education. Other professional memberships include the National Association for Music Education, the American Educational Research Association, the American Orff-Schulwerk Association, the Organization of American Kodály Educators, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, and Kappa Kappa Psi.
