Information for all CSU students and administrators who will be participating in the Competition

Cal State East Bay (CSUEB) is honored to host the 34th Annual California State University Student Research Competition Virtually on Friday, April 24, 2020 from 12pm-5:30pm. This system-wide competition showcases the innovative research and creative activities of CSU undergraduate and graduate students in the full range of academic programs offered by the CSU. Student participants make oral presentations before juries of professional experts from major corporations, foundations, public agencies, colleges and universities of California.

The competition is held annually to promote excellence in undergraduate and graduate scholarly research and creative activity. It recognizes outstanding student accomplishments from throughout the twenty-three campuses of the California State University.

The virtual competition will have our live Q&A sessions Friday, April 24, 2020. First set of sessions running from 12pm-2:30pm and second set of sessions running 3pm-5:30pm. The question and answer period will be 5 minutes long per presenter and there will be a 5 minute break in between each presenter.

ALL STUDENT COMPETITORS (including East Bay students): You must register for the Competition by end of Sunday March 15, 2020!

If you have been selected as a student competitor for your campus, you must register via this link no later than 11:59pm on March 15, 2020. If you have a co-presenter only one of you needs to register your project, but must be prepared to enter information on behalf of their co-presenter (see the email about registration from your campus coordinator for details). Typically, 1 or 2 students present a single project, but you can have as many presenters as you want for the 10-minute talk. We look forward to seeing you at Cal State East Bay in April!

CSU STATEWIDE STUDENT RESEARCH COMPETITION CANCELLED FOR APRIL 24-25, 2020

The 34^th annual CSU Student Research Competition scheduled for April 24-25 at Cal State East Bay has been cancelled. This difficult decision was made in consultation with Cal State East Bay President Leroy Morishita and the Chancellor’s office. The health and safety of our university communities is our prime concern. Considering the fluidity of the current situation with COVID-19 and precautions limiting travel, there is no other option than to cancel at this time. The organizing committee, in consultation with the Chancellor’s office, is considering other options such as changing the mode of the competition and rescheduling the competition to a later time.

The CSU Student Research Competition is an opportunity for us to celebrate the remarkable achievements of our students. We deeply regret that the current situation has impacted this important event for our students.

Coordinators on each campus should send the list of student participants that will be representing their campus by March 13. Students should complete the online registration by March 15. In addition, it would be helpful if campus coordinators could also indicate whether any of the participating students are seniors or graduate students that will be graduating this term. This information will help us to plan an alternate event. Competition Information

Overview and Guidelines

Who May Apply

Undergraduate or graduate students currently enrolled at any CSU campus, as well as alumni/alumnae who receive their degrees in Spring, Summer, or Fall 2019, are eligible. Research and/or creative activities presented should be appropriate to the student’s discipline and career goals. Proprietary research is excluded.

Presentations from all disciplines are invited. There will be separate undergraduate and graduate divisions for each of the following categories (unless a division has too few entrants; undergraduate and graduate may be combined). The CSUEB steering committee reserves the right to combine or subdivide these categories, or to move an entrant from one category to another, as submissions necessitate.

Engineering and Computer Science
Health, Nutrition, and Clinical Sciences
Humanities and Letters
Physical and Mathematical Sciences

Any campus delegation may include up to ten entries across the ten categories. A small team of students making a single presentation counts as a single entry. See Registration instructions for how to register a single entry or team.

How to Apply

Each CSU campus appoints a campus coordinator and develops its own procedures for selecting its student delegates for the system-wide competition. Interested students should contact their campus coordinator or office of student research for information. Only those students endorsed by a campus coordinator can enter the system-wide competition.

Written Summary

The rules governing the written summary are as follows:

The title page must include the title of the presentation and the names(s) of all student and faculty currently involved on the project.
The narrative may not exceed five double-spaced pages and must use fonts and margins that ensure legibility.
Appendices (bibliography, graphs, photographs, or other supplementary materials) may not exceed three pages.
Research that involves human or animal subjects must have appropriate institutional review approval.
It is expected that the student will not make an oral presentation by simply reading directly from the written summary.

Save your Written Summary as a PDF file with your last name and campus abbreviation (e.g., Romero_CSUEB). For teams, include each team member’s last name (e.g., Romero_Claudia_CSUEB)

Title of Presentation

The title of your presentation must be 25 words or fewer.

Project Synopsis

Provide a brief summary of the project that can be distributed across campuses (25 words or fewer).

Deadlines

The deadline for campus coordinators to send their selected student delegate information is 5:00pm on Friday, March 13, 2020. Detailed instructions will be emailed to campus coordinators.

The deadline for students to register is Sunday, March 15, 2020.

Campus coordinators will be notified in writing by CSUEB of the times of their student delegate presentations, local hotel and transportation options, and program details. More information will be provided as it becomes available. Check the website periodically for updates.

How to Register

Once you have been selected by your university to represent your campus, go to the Register drop down accordion menu. The deadline for students to register is Sunday, March 15^th.

Student Delegates Presenting Alone: Fill out one registration form.

Student Delegates Presenting as a Team: Select one person as the team’s representative. That person completes one registration form with the contact information for every team member. The representative begins the registration form and adds the team members as “co-applicants”. Additional team member's(over the amount of 2) information will need to be emailed to csr@csueastbay.edu

All video presentations were uploaded and submitted via YouTube. The only people with access to these videos are the judges. If you would like your campus to publicly post your video, please contact your campus coordinator. We will not be posting any video presentations other than our own campus videos(Cal State East Bay) for privacy reasons.

Judges and Moderator Information

Cal State East Bay will be hosting the 34th annual CSU Student Research Competition Virtually on Friday, April 24, 2020. This system-wide competition will showcase research conducted by the top CSU students from the 23 campuses that comprise the CSU system.

JUDGES AND MODERATORS NEEDED!

Judges

We are seeking knowledgeable experts from institutions of higher education, preferably outside of the CSU system, PhD candidates outside of the CSU system, industry, nonprofits, or public agencies to serve as jurors. Jurors will be asked to review a 5-page research summary for each presenter in their assigned session, listen to the 10-minute oral presentations during the session, and work with other jurors to select first and second place winners. Jurors will receive a $200 stipend per day.

Moderators

Moderators will keep presentation sessions organized by introducing student speakers and keeping time during each presentation. You do not need prior experience moderating presentations. Moderators will be volunteer only.
