SFBRN Update

Important Update: Canvas Access Restored

Dear Students, Faculty, and Staff,

Instructure has restored Canvas services and our technology team has enabled campus access to Canvas. Please use caution and review the “What to Know Before You Log in” guidance here.

The Chancellor’s Office and the CSU campuses have been actively working closely with state partners and security teams to ensure all recommended security protocols and validations were fully completed before restoring access to Canvas.

This is a global issue driven by actors that targeted Instructure’s data system, the company which develops and hosts Canvas for thousands of educational institutions. The CSU carefully balanced the risks involved with reactivating our Canvas instances with those of not having the resources available for end of semester activities. Campus technology teams are proactively backing up critical grade data and securing the environments while taking the step of enabling Canvas for broader campus use.

The CSU will never ask for payment from faculty or students for the use of Canvas, including for examinations. In an abundance of caution, we strongly recommend that you backup any important or necessary documents.

In case of any question or concerns, please contact the Network Support Center or contact your campus LMS support team at canvas@csueastbay.edu.

Sincerely,
Thomas Dixon
Chief Information Security Officer
San Francisco Bay Region Network (CSUEB|SFSU|SSU)
