The Center for Community Engagement

About Us

Our efforts and initiatives focus on ways that Cal State East Bay can contribute to the well being of our local communities. Our community partners represent a broad scope of non profit and public entities that contribute to education, arts, equity, community health, food security, and sustainability. Our office supports faculty, students, and community agencies in a variety of ways: Curriculum Development, Community Contacts, Student Placements, Professional Development, and Project Planning. The Center for Community Engagement houses the Cal State S4 application in an effort to centralize the student placement and risk management processes associated with community-based learning.  S4 is an online platform hosted by the Chancellor’s Office which manages student placements, facilitates the off-campus learning risk management process, and lists community partnership information.  Students and faculty may use CalStateS4 for their courses, to find and place with organizations who have a current agreement with the Center.  Please email if you have any questions.

A Celebration of Service! Student-hosted poster session, Wednesday, May 23rd, 11-2, UU MPR.

Please join us as students who have participated in community service activities host posters of their learning and service.  Open house format. Refreshments served.

There are a variety of courses which require students to go out into the community as a part of course learning: internships, fieldwork, service learning. We call these courses “community-based learning.”  Students also often seek out internships or community service opportunities to gain more experience. Any student using a community-based learning experience for credit must follow certain steps.

CalStateS4 is an online platform which manages these off-campus placements. CalStateS4 also lists information on potential placement sites for students needing to find a community partner or project.  Students in community-based learning courses or seeking to use an off-campus (unpaid) placement for credit, must log their placement in CalStateS4.  Students using, or planning to use a site that is not listed in CalStateS4, must complete the Student Placement Request for a Non-Contracted Site.

Please email for any additional questions.
