Faculty

Faculty play the most direct role in shaping how students engage with AI. This page brings together policy guidance, syllabus tools, and campus support.

Syllabus Policy Options

  1. AI Prohibited Generative AI tools (including ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, and similar tools) are not permitted in this course. All submitted work must reflect your own original thinking and writing. Use of AI-generated content in any assignment constitutes academic dishonesty and will be handled in accordance with the CSUEB Academic Integrity policy.
  2. AI Permitted with Attribution Generative AI tools may be used in this course only for the following purposes: [instructor specifies — e.g., brainstorming, editing for clarity, generating practice questions]. All AI-assisted work must be clearly disclosed. Include a brief statement at the end of any submission where AI was used, describing which tool was used, for what purpose, and to what extent. You remain fully responsible for the accuracy, originality, and integrity of all submitted work.
  3. AI Required This course includes assignments that require the use of generative AI tools as part of the learning experience. Specific tools and tasks will be identified in individual assignment instructions. The goal is to develop your ability to use AI critically, ethically, and effectively — skills that are increasingly expected in professional settings. Disclosure of AI use is required for all relevant assignments.
  4. AI Flexible (Student Choice with Mandatory Disclosure) You may choose whether or not to use generative AI tools in this course, unless otherwise specified for a particular assignment. If you use AI assistance in any submitted work, you must disclose this clearly, identifying which tool was used, for what purpose, and to what extent. Undisclosed use of AI where disclosure is expected constitutes academic dishonesty. You are responsible for verifying the accuracy of all AI-assisted content before submission.
If you use AI tools to generate alternate formats of course materials — such as captions, transcripts, or alt text — please also include an accessibility statement indicating this. Questions about applying these policies to specific assignments can be directed to the Office of Faculty Development (OFD).

Faculty AI Use Checklist

Do

  • Use AI to support teaching, research, and service activities
  • State your AI expectations clearly in your syllabus using the four standardized policy options
  • Verify the accuracy of any AI-assisted materials, citations, or content before using them with students
  • Disclose AI use in research, grant writing, or formal reports where appropriate
  • Protect student data and confidentiality in all AI-assisted work
  • Treat AI outputs as drafts that require your expert review and judgment
  • Support student AI literacy by building assignments that teach critical, ethical AI use

Avoid

  • Using AI as the sole mechanism to evaluate student work or generate personalized feedback without meaningful human review
  • Requiring students to use or avoid AI without a clear pedagogical rationale
  • Entering identifiable student data, FERPA-protected records, or confidential information into any AI tool
  • Delegating final assessment decisions, grading, or academic integrity determinations solely to AI
  • Reverting to exclusively in-person, timed, or handwritten assessments solely to prevent AI use — this creates barriers for students with disabilities
  • Overrelying on AI-generated feedback in place of direct instructor engagement with student work
  • Assuming AI-generated content is accurate without independent verification
