CSU Council on Ocean Affairs, Science and Technology (COAST)
Program Description
The CSU Council on Ocean Affairs, Science and Technology (COAST) is the umbrella organization for marine and coastal related activities within the CSU. COAST promotes research and education to advance our knowledge of California’s natural marine and coastal resources and the processes that affect them.
The scope of COAST includes:
- The open and coastal ocean;
- Coastal zones (bays, estuaries, beaches);
- Coastal watersheds to the extent that the organism, material or process ultimately articulates with the coast.
COAST’s goals are to:
- Support research related to marine, estuarine, coastal and coastal watershed regions.
- Advance our knowledge of natural coastal and marine resources and the processes that affect them.
- Develop innovative solutions to the economic, sociological, ecological and technological challenges that our coastal zone faces.
- Promote environmental literacy to foster stewardship and sustainable use of our coast.
Undergraduate Student Research Support Program
Research stipends and travel and supplies grants are available to undergraduate students interested in pursuing marine-related careers. The goal of this program is to provide them with the opportunity to obtain the skills necessary to join a highly skilled, technologically advanced workforce while promoting and supporting CSU faculty research.

Graduate Student Research Awards
COAST provides support to CSU graduate students engaged in marine and coastal research with CSU COAST faculty members. These awards support students interested in pursuing marine-related careers and provide them with the opportunity to obtain the skills necessary to join a highly skilled, technologically advanced workforce while promoting and supporting CSU faculty research.

Attention Coast Students
The NOAA NMFS West Coast Region Protected Resources Division is looking for a CSU graduate student to lead the development of a new program to incorporate photo identification (ID) into the study of green sea turtles in southern California: turtle project
This is a fantastic opportunity to get hands on experience that may complement or be incorporated into your thesis. The project is based at the NMFS West Coast Region Office in Long Beach but the student does NOT have to be from the immediate area and will be able to participate remotely from their home campus anywhere in the state. COAST can provide some travel support to the CSU student to help defray the costs of traveling to Long Beach 2-3 times/year. Students from throughout CA are highly encouraged to consider and apply for this opportunity!

Current Funding Opportunities
- Grant Development Program: Awards up to $20,000 to support full proposal development for extramural funding. Application deadline: Monday, April 25, 2016, 5:00 p.m. Pacific time. Register for the webinar on Thursday, March 3, 2016 from 10:00-11:00 a.m. by emailing jcormier@csumb.edu.
- Short Course and Workshop Funding: Awards up to $10,000 to develop and host a short course or workshop on any topic that falls within or is related to the scope of COAST. Applications accepted on a continual basis until April 30, 2016.
- Summer Student Internship Program: 18 PAID marine and coastal science internship opportunities are available with state and federal agencies, non profits and private industry this summer through COAST. Application deadline: Monday March 14, 2016, 5:00 p.m. Pacific time. Please share this information with both undergraduate and graduate students.
- Spring 2016 Seminar Speaker Series Program: Funding still available to host seminar speakers from other CSU campuses during Winter/Spring 2016 terms. Applications accepted on a continual basis until all funds are awarded.
