• The Science Communities of Practice Partnership received a $3.4 million grant from the National Science Foundation. The money will be used to develop and study an effective professional development model for grades 3-5 science teachers. It builds on an eight-year science professional development program and research partnership between Cal State East Bay and Alameda County Office of Education known as the Science Partnership of the East Bay. • Physics professor Kathryn Grimm has received a $389,598 grant from the National Science Foundation to support her work investigating collision events of Higgs Bosons in the Large Hadron Collider at CERN near Geneva, Switzerland. In addition, undergraduate students from Cal State East Bay will have the opportunity for research internships at CERN.
• Earth and Environmental Science professor Jean Moran will be moderating a panel at the Groundwater Resources Association of California inaugural Western Groundwater Congress Sept. 25-27 in Sacramento.
• Cal State East Bay professor Nolan Higdon was recently featured on KCBS, ABC-7 and NBC Bay Area discussing President Donald Trump’s tweets toward Google. See his NBC Bay Area interview online.
• “University of Chicago Magazine” recently highlighted professor Stephen Morewitz for his work researching the SS Quanza controversy, a 1940 incident involving Jewish refugees being denied safe harbor in Norfolk, Virginia, and Veracruz, Mexico. Morewitz is the coauthor of the related play “Steamship Quanza.”
• Cal State East Bay lecturer and San Francisco Police Department officer JoAnn Walker will be honored with the Officers for Justice Peace Officers Association’s Isaiah Nelson Award for Education at a gala in late September.
