As you already know, the Bay Area’s air quality has been affected by the wildfires north of us. Currently, Hayward air quality is rated as “moderate.” At this level, according to airnow.gov, air quality is acceptable, however, for some pollutants there may be a moderate health concern for people who are unusually sensitive to air pollution.

These conditions change and are unpredictable and we are continually monitoring pollution levels. In any case, we should take precautions for the health and welfare of students, staff and faculty. These include checking air quality reports and curtailing or canceling outdoor activities and events as appropriate. Building HVAC systems have been set to recirculate and not draw in outside air.

The smoke from these fires will affect each of us in different ways. We encourage you to take care of your health.

  1. Listen to your body, if you are experiencing health symptoms, consult your healthcare provider.
  2. Reduce the amount of time spent outdoors and avoid strenuous activity.
  3. Find areas in building that have fresher air.
  4. Drink lots of water.
  5. Work with your supervisor to take fresh breaks.
  6. Drive your car with recirculating air.
