David R. Hansen, doctoral student in the economics program at Stanford University, will present his research, “The Effects of Crime on Educational Investment: A Policy Simulation Approach,” on Feb 16 as part of the CSUEB Department of Economics seminar series.

Hansen’s paper explores the questions "What influence do crime rates and levels of investment have on one another?" and "How do government policies affect the relationship between investment and crime?" Using simulation models, he shows that increasing spending on police or increasing the severity of punishment reduces crime has little effect on educational investment while increased educational subsidies increase educational investment but reduce crime only slightly. Hansen states that “one type of policy is insufficient to accomplish the goals of both reducing crime and increasing education.”

The event will be held at 2 p.m. in the Valley Business and Technology Center (VBT), room 126, on the Hayward campus. Admission is free.
