USC recognizes CSUEB alumna with 'Distinguished Service Award'

Susan Cutter, B.A., geography ('73) is a Carolina Distinguished Professor of Geography at the University of South Carolina. She is also the director of the USC Hazards Research Lab. Her primary research interests are in the area of vulnerability science. She has authored or edited 12 books and more than 100 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters. Among her books are The Geographical Dimensions of Terrorism, American Hazardscapes: The Regionalization of Hazards and Disasters, and the recent Hazards, Vulnerability, and Environmental Justice. Cutter serves on many national advisory boards and committees including those of the National Research Council, the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), and the Heinz Center.

Most recently, she has led a Hurricane Katrina post-event field team to examine the geographic extent of storm surge inundation along the Mississippi and Alabama coastline and its relationship to the social vulnerability of communities. Cutter has provided expert testimony to Congress on hazards and vulnerability and was a member of the US Army Corps of Engineers IPET team evaluating the social impacts of the New Orleans and Southeast Louisiana Hurricane Protection System in response to Hurricane Katrina. She will receive the Distinguished Service Award Mar 23 at the University of South Carolina.
